Hot tubs

My boys go swimming every week at a public pool. Their Drs reassured me that they would be fine. This last week they went into the hot tub afterwards. They said that they both had trouble breathing when they first went in but were fine after a couple of minutes. When they came home both boys were coughing alot more than normal. I presumed that all the heat and steam loosened them up. Should I be allowing them to go into the hot tub?

As a child I would go in hot tubs once and awhile, and still do on the occasion. Most likely the hot water and steam did loosen their lungs causing them to cough. I find that when I'm very congested, I steam up my bathroom and sit in there, till my lungs loosen up. I would talk to your doc about letting them go in a hot tub on a regular basis, but I don't really see a problem in it. As a child I was always at water parks, public pools, etc, and I never worried or caught anything bad for me.

It is true that the steam can do you good, that it can loosen thing up in the lungs.
However my doc always tells me not to go into whirlpools or hot tubs in swimmingpools. They are a big source for bacteria. I'd ask your doc about it if i were you.
If you think the steam will do your boys good they could do that in the bathroom at home too, just let the shower run in a bowl of cold water.

Our doctor has always told us NO hot tubs. Swimming pools okay 'cuz they're a lower temp. We got rid of our hot tub when ds was born and diagnosed because of it. Glad I did after reading Sunday's Paper. Liza Here's an article that was in our paper yesterday.

A teaspoon of typical tap water has about 138 bacteria. A teaspoon of typical hot tub water has about 2.17 million. That?s only one of the unsettling findings by a team of Texas A&M researchers.

Of the 43 public and private tubs tested, a scary 95 percent showed the presence of (squeamish reader alert) fecal bacteria; 81 percent had fungi; and 34 percent contained staphylococcus, which can cause deadly infections. The researchers said the lining of whirlpool pipes was where the nastiest stuff grew. When the jets are turned on, the bacteria and fungi are blown into the tub. A typical cleaning provided little protection.
