How long...

I went in the hospital on Jan 19th for 4 days and finished out the rest of the iv antibiotics at home. I finished them up on Feb 9th. Last Mon. (2/5) I called my nurse to let them know that I felt better but the color of the sputum had gone from clear to yellow (even though I was currently on iv antibiotics). They said to go ahead and finish out the week on the iv antibiotics and call them on Friday before I stopped them. They felt it would clear up before I finished them. It did clear up and my antibiotics were stopped last friday; however, I am already coughing up an almost lime green color sputum again. I feel ok. I just don't recall coughing up green sputum that soon after completing my iv therapy. Also, this time he had me on 3 weeks instead of 2. I have always done just 2 weeks.

So, I am wondering, on average, how long after you complete i.v. antibiotics does the color of your sputum go back to yellow or green?

Thanks.

For me, I guess it depends on what bug is causing the most problems...the last time I was in (Dec 15-29), it was because of my favorite cootie of all, cepacia...my lungs were loaded with it. It took about a week for the sputum to start to look better, by the time I left it was my typical yellowish/ slightly green gunk but much thinner (and my cepacia colony count down thanks to the nuke juice the docs gave me). I think it depends on the person, perhaps the bug or bugs too and how high your colony counts were, etc....Just like CF, it sounds like it varies person to person. Hugs, Jenn <img src="">
I forgot to add that it doesn't take long before I get junky again, it seems to be a cycle for me...every 3-4 months, the colony counts are out of control, I feel sick and I am admitted once again for IV's.....

It usually takes me a week or two and my gunk starts showing itself again and is usually dark yellow and turns to green within another week or two. I don't fret over it unless I start feeling sick again, which usually takes about 8-12 months.
