How to start GSH/Curcumin regimen?

I also posted this on the CF 2 chat site, sorry for those of you who read both, but I thought there may be a few on this site that don't visit that one that have information.I am interested in starting the GSH regimen. I read through that one forum on CF and GSH useage but couldn't post there as it required that I register to use it and I didn't feel like doing that.Anyway, here is my gigantic list of questions:I prefer the idea of taking it in pill form as opposed to inhaling it. Does this work? How much do I take and how? Is it better to follow the dosage on the bottle or Dr. Bishop's recommendation (his recommendation is 30mg/pound taken in 4 doses, 3-4 hours apart)? (To note - my weight varies between 105 and 115 pounds). I read the papers on Dr. Bishop's site - it mentioned the use of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine to begin the regimen, but ceasing use after awhile as it can be toxic to the liver. How long do you take this for and at what dose?I'm also planning on adding Curcurim to my regimen. I read that the recommended dose is 43mg per kg in body weight - is this accurate?Sorry for all of these questions - I've just never strayed from the typical methods of dealing with CF. My doc okayed me to try these things out but said there was no set dosing so I'd have to tweak the regimen myself. Also, I've read on various board that some brands are better than others. What are your preferences for each of these supplements? Anything I should be careful of? Any bad side effects or possible future problems from taking these supplements? Also, I was planning on adding Usana vitamins to my regimen as I have family members (non CF) that take them and love them. Anyone else have experience with them?Thank you for your help! Piperpmcp@comcast.net

I was also thinking of adding Mannatech's Ambrotose supplements. Any info on these? Are there other supplements by Mannatech that any of you take that you'd recommend? Thanks!Piper

PiperI would join the GSH and Cystic Fibrosis site if you are really interested. People there can really help you.As far as dosing there is a protocol on Utah Valley Institute's website. Here is the page that has a link to the Initial Protocol put out by Dr. Clark: http://members.tripod.com/uvicf/research/glutathione.htmTo tell you the truth, the most noticable changes are from inhaling GSH. Not so sure about how much I absorb with the oral supplements.Jakeyacobius@yahoo.com

What is GSH? And how does it help? Also, does anyone have any advice on diabeties? I think I have it and am a little nervous about it. What is the usual form of treatment? Any help or ideas would be welcome.Mindywol@comcast.net

Hi Piper,I do two inhaled GSH+ treatments a day. Instead of mixing it with sterile water, I use saline. I've tried water several times, but my lungs got too tight so I tried saline and had great results. I've tried oral GSH, but I have had some wierd reactions. I'm going to give it a try again, maybe later this summer. I also use Mannatech's Ambrotose and Phyt-Aloe. I've been using them for almost a year and a half. I've seen some good results with this too. Tammy 43wcf

What kind of weird reactions did you have? Also, Dr. Bishop's papers say not to use saline - I wonder if the salt in it could possibly breakdown the GSH before it hits the body?

I am not totally sure, but the reason to not us saline(your body's preference) is that the our lungs are a certain PH. Regular old GSH mixed with sterile water agrevates the airways because it is the wrong PH. Theranaturals buffers their GSH for inhalation so that when mixed with distilled water it is the right PH. Supposedly mixing the buffered GSH with saline would change the PH too much. But many people effectively use saline solution.Jake

I started running low grade fevers when I was doing the oral GSH. I would walk to school to pick up my kids in the hot weather and I would have a fever when I got home. It was like my body couldn't get rid of the heat. Also my body would start to tingle and itch when I got hot. There was a name for this reaction, but I can't remember right now.As far as the saline and GSH+, it works for me. I would rather use that than nothing at all. I can't use it with water. Tried several different times over a 3 year period!Tammy 43wcf

I have never inhaled gsh because i was told it would be a bad idea , since i have had severe problems with hemoptysis in the past. I have been using gsh orally now for a little over a year. I used to go by the protocol that Dr. Bishop recommends, and i also have just taken it as it says on the back of the bottle ( 3 per day). I found that taking the 3 per day ( with 500 mg. vit.c each dose) works out just fine for me. I have never taken the NAC, but i do take selennium now that i started the gsh. I read somewhere that it helps with the gsh so i added that to my list of vitamins. The oral gsh has made a difference for me in a few different ways. My energy has increased, my need for iv antibiotics has decreased, i just generally feel better.... Having b.cepacia is a constant struggle , and gsh has helped me a lot~Diane 39 / cf / diabetes / b.cepacia
