Hypertonic Saline

Sean's Dr. wants him to start on hypertonic saline. She wrote us an Rx but our local pharmacy (CVS) can't get it. She recommended going through the CF pharmacy but our ins. won't cover Rx's from them because it's mail order and they use their own mail order pharmacy. Where are you all getting your hypertonic saline through? Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

Aetna mail order pharmacy provies me with my Hypertonic Salene.

They got a little confused at 1st, but once I broke it down for them (I need equal amounts of 10% and 3% vials) it came through fine.

I avoid the CF Pharmacy at all costs. They are so disorganized and they have shortages often. It's sad to say but because they're non-profit, I don't think they try as hard. For profit pharmacies have to work harder for your business and this is reflected in their customer service.

If you acnt get it thru a mail order I know that most pharmicies will not carry it. Only ones that have been in the studies. I am seen at Vanderbilt University and its rare but they are one of the pahramcies that carries this. I would call your cf doctor back and tell them that you need them to tell you where to get this since you cant do mail order. If they are going to prescribe it for you they should help make sure you can get it.

They do not sell the "kits", it comes in pre-mixed vials. 60 vials (30 day supply) is $36 total (includes shipping).

They do not bill insurance for it, so you are responsible for payment. From the time we ordered it, until we received it was about a week. We have just started on the HS so have only ordered it through them once, but we have been pleased with their service so far.

We get ours from the CF services pharmacy. It is already mixed and everything. It costs about $25 dollars a month.

Off-topic, but I was just standing in the Farm Supply/Western Store picking up dog food and I heard them say something about ordering more bottles of hypertonic saline. So I asked what it was used for and was told to help with electrolytes -- must be used in iv solutions. I mentioned I was curious 'cuz ds has cf and HS is being used as a treatment. The owner of the store said, he wasn't surprised. Years ago the local Cancer Center used to purchase some sort of horse wormer from them that they found helped with cancer treatment. Huh! Liza

I have to get my meds through a mail order, or my insurance won't pay either. However, I also work at a drugstore and I know small chains can not just get the stuff in, so I used the cf pharmacy. My insurance does not cover meds from them, but I wanted to try it. Well, anyway, I sent it off, and they did pay for this one. I still can't get anything else from them, but they will pay for hs. I'd give it a shot. They have been really helpful with the entire process.

My local pharmacy is Eckerds & they couldnt get it or didnt bother tho they are usually good about all my "unusual" meds. I ordered thru the CF pharmarcy & my insurance company did pay for it. Its the only time I have used the CF pharmacy. I avoid mail order if I can. I just like to go in at the last minute & get it in person if I have to! BUT I also have the option. Suppose if I didnt have choices then I would do what I had to do !
