inflammation

Lately it's been feeling like my lungs are sooo inflamed. I started using my Advair, knowing that's what my doc would tell me to do. Although, it doesn't last...neither does my albuterol. It feels like I'm either breathing through a straw, or someone stuffed cotton balls in my lungs when I wasn't looking. I can't really find long lasting relief...any suggestions? I'd like to find as many ways to try to feel better before I call the doc and get put on prednisone...my body is not a big fan of prednisone. I've tried benadryl for inflammation before and it's given me relief, but a)it makes me so sleepy and b)while it does work as an anti-inflammatory, it really dries me up, so I can't use it as often as I'd like to.

I don't know how this will work for you if you are not diabetic but maybe cutting some sugars out of your diet. I find that when I take in more sugary foods/drinks my lungs feel more inflammed.

Hope you start feeling better,
Lindsey

I had this problem this past january, and my doctor put me on Symbicort. Symbicort is a combination inhaler that contains two separate medications, a preventer and a controller/reliever in the same one inhaler. The preventer medicine is an anti-inflammatory medicine called budesonide (Pulmicort). The anti-inflammatory effect of regular treatment with budesonide helps to prevent asthma symptoms. Formoterol (Oxis) is the controller medicine that relaxes and opens up the small airways, helping you to breathe more easily and avoid an attack. Formoterol not only works for a long period of time, but you will also feel the effect quickly - in fact as quickly as your usual reliever medication. Because of this speed, formoterol can act as both a controller and reliever.

I've noticed a world of difference since taking this. I take it 2x a day, and find that my breathing has improved since taking it. I also take my regular puffer (salbutamol) before hand as well.

What about Zithro? Long term that works as an anti-inflammatory as well. Has your doctor talked to you about trying it? I take that 3x a week.

Edited to add: I've heard that eating an apple 2x a week helps with lung function as well - that it aids with inflammation. Something to consider anyway.

Hi Erin,
Sorry to hear you're having trouble and feeling so inflamed. I'm
also not a fan of prednisone. It makes me puff up like a chipmunk
and doesn't really do much to help things. Benadryl dries me out
too.

Which strength of Advair are you on? Generally that's not
designed to work as a "rescue" med, so it's not
surprising that it isn't providing much relief. This might sound
like an overly simple solution, but have you tried sipping honey
chammomile tea? Or at least inhaling the steam from it? Goofy, I
know, but sometimes that helps me when my body just doesn't get
relief from anything else.
I hope you find something that works soon! I hate that
"breathing through a straw" feeling. Ugh.

Hi Erin

I like what Lindsey said about sugars. I will add that if I ate really healthy and added some essential healthy fats to my diet like avacdo, sesame oil, olive oil, flax seed oil and a few others out there my lungs felt so much better.

I would only do one at a time of the above. Too many fats will keep you in the bathroom or lieu depending on where you are from.

If I have any oil, I have no more than a teaspon and I would not fry with these oils. Essential fats are much healthier when consummed cold. If you see experller pressed oils that is also a good choice.

There is much to be said about imflammation in the body and changing your food intake.

Relaxing helps so much and if you are kind of out there like me try

How about a massage? I know that when my airways were extremely restricted even on pulmicort, advair & yes dear old Prednisone that a massage made a difference. My back muscles have a huge amount of influence! Good Luck!
