Influenza A & Inconsiderate People

So Monday night I'm sitting at a meeting and a colleague comes in and sits next to me, tells another person that he's got the chills, his muscles are aching... But this is someone whose always sick -- "bottle flu" So I just kinda ignored it.

Then yesterday, I asked my husband if this same person was at a meeting he held at his office. Yes, but "when isn't he sick". Well apparently, our colleague roomed last weekend at the State Basketball tourneys with someone who has influenza A and now HE himself has the flu. Grrr! How many times do we have to tell people if they're sick to stay home and STAY AWAY from us.

I have a big gripe with that myself. I never understood why when someones really sick they dont just stay the heck home and not spread it to everyone around them.
The problem with the type of person you mention ....who's always complaining of being sick just to have something to talk about ( hypochondriac or attention seekers), makes it very hard to distinguish when they really are sick.

I think a lot of the time people don't think about it because of a few things:

1) They're probably miserable from the symptoms of whatever bug they have, so their primary focus is looking out for #1.

2) Most people have healthy immune systems. They grew up passing bugs willy nilly and it never did any harm. They forget that there are some people who have weakened immune systems who have to be very careful.

3) They think it's a badge of honor to "tough it out" and come to work/school/visits etc. sick. They figure people will say "oh bless your heart, you're so sick but you still made it...awww"

4) And of course there are those who are flat-out butts.

We can't change other people's behavior, we can only do what they're doing and look out for #1. Steer clear of them if you can, and keep washing those hands!

It used to irritate me to no end whenever any of my colleagues would come in sick with a dreadfull virus or bug of some sort. Not only is it inconsiderate to do as the virus that they have usually gets passed on to whoever is working in the unit, but it is dangerous to expose their patients to it! Yes, I am talking about my fellow nurse buddies...I worked in the ICU where the normal population was elderly, very ill, immunocompromised etc and exposing them to just one particle of the virus would get them sick too. So not only are they fighting for their lives from whatever landed them into the ICU, they have to battle infections that the staff gives them! Grr....I say don't be a hero, stay home...that is what sick days are designed for. Anytime I had a stomache parasite, fever, violent cough...I would call in. I didn't care if the manager tried to guilt me in, I knew it wasn't to my advantage or anyone else's to come in.
These days I don't have to worry about that as I don't work as a nurse right now, but I still have to remind family members or anyone else who comes to the home to not do so if they have any symptoms.
Hugs, Jenn
