Insulin question

Hi,

I was just wondering how you guys do your insulin, do you count carbs? Right now, I don't do that because it is rare that I need coverage, usually can be controlled with diet.

I was wondering what your scale was mine is usually

140-150 2 units
150-160 3 units

etc...

Also, I just happen to test my urine today because I thought I was getting a UTI and it showed I was spilling a bunch of glucose into my urine, I know that can happen after major surgery, but it has been three and half weeks now, do you guys get glucose in your urine? I tested my sugar right after that and it was only 146 which I know is not wonderful but I shouldn't be dumping glucose...

Thanks

Jennifer

What range do you start taking insulin? My little boy is borderline CFRD....his numbers run from 120 to 140. What's normal?

Glucose levels in children are different then adults. Kids tend to run lower then adults, and therefore they have a lower range.. How old is your child...

I do two units if my sugar is above 140

I give insulin based on carb intake.

Currently my insulins dosing has been pretty bizarre because my sugars have been strange - meaning very high after breakfast but normal at all other times of the day.

My doc currently has be giving 1 unit of Novolog per 8 grams of carbs at breakfast ONLY.
As for lunch and dinner I give 1 unit of Novolog per 15 - 20 grams of carbs. It depends on the types of carbs I am taking in as to what carb count I use. If it is sugary carbs I go with 1 unit/15 grams, if it is healthier carbs like fruit or breads I go with 1 unit/20 grams.

In the past I have only done 1unit per every 15-20 grams of carbs. I have been on this new sliding scale the past 2 months - my doc thinks my body is going through some hormonal changes that are causing an increase in my sugars in the first part of the day because I do not have problems with my sugar after 1pm on.

With highs I usually give 1 unit extra if my sugar is between 150-180, 2 units extra if my sugar is between 181-200 and 3 units extra if it is 201-220. Normally my sugar never runs higher than that so I don't have to deal with more than that usually.

When I am on a bunch of steroids or IV meds - especially if the IV meds are mixed in dextrose I have to double or sometimes triple my insulin intake. Especially with prednisone - that stuff works a number on my sugars.

wow, i feel like i am on a ton of insulin now after reading what you guys take!

my sliding scale is as follows:
1 unit 140
2 units 180
3 units 220 etc etc

if this is a fasting level and i eat a meal, this will be given in addition to what i take for that meal. i do carb count--i'm not a professional at it, but i do alright.

i take 1 unit for every 10 grams of carbs. it is not an exact science for me, though.

i also do 18 or 20 units of lantis (long acting) insulin at bedtime.

lindsey, i went through a time when i was having high sugars in the mornings. i have since gone on the long-acting insulin, which has helped. also i used to eat a lot of sugary breakfast foods--its hard NOT to. now i try to eat whole grain cereals or something like raisin bran or crispix. also yogurt. anyway, hope you can get that under control b/c i know that made me feel crappy in the mornings.

Hey Laura,

I take Lantus now too. I actually have to half my dose and give half at breakfast and half at bedtime. I take 12-14 units of Lantus daily (usually between 5-7 units per dosing).

I know what I eat for breakfast has alot to do with my sugars being high too but I don't want to cut out anything lol. I usually have a bowl of cereal - of course sugary - an orange or banana or both. When I have both I drink water if I only have 1 (either orange or banana) I will throw in a little bit of apple juice with my water.

I have tried cutting back and changing cereals but it doesn't matter what cereal I eat my sugar is through the roof. If I have toast and eggs my sugar is normally fine ... but I don't like fixing those every day ... or eating them everyday.

Take Care,
Lindsey
