Intestinal blockage/DIOS

Does anyone have problems with intestinal blockages or distal intestinal obstruction syndrome? I posted in another thread about my little daughter Chrissy who has trouble with frequent staph infections. We had just got her feeling better from her last infection and then had to take her to the ER a couple of days ago with an intestinal blockage (severe tummy pains, not eating, not pooping for 30 hrs which is NOT like her). It was a miserable 5 hrs of x rays, bloodwork (couldn't get enough), throat swabs (crackes in one of her lungs so had to make sure her antibiotics are working), and a very uncomfortable Mucomyst enema.

She has been given increased lactulose, Motilium, oral Mucomyst, and Senekot. She had another blockage back in April; her Dr. said it's from the sticky CF mucus in her gut, plus general malabsorption issues. Does anyone know of anything else that might help to prevent this? Thank you and Merry Christmas everyone!

Some people use miralax on a regular basis. Others, when they get that "feeling" take a hit of milk of mag. When we notice that ds hasn't pooed for awhile, his eating has been off, we'll give him some milk of mag to get things moving again. I've also heard of using go-lytlely.

I have problems if I dont drink enough water & if I overdo the amount of shakes & enzymes in a short period of time. In the hospital I was giving a mixture which I cant remember the name of since I was so backed up I was vomiting & running fevers. It worked & disolved well & didnt taste amy different them plain water. I was quite surprised. Many CFers have this problem. Many take preventatives along with all the other meds. The key when you are prone to it is to maintain since it is so hard to correct once its an actual problem which you have found out.

Melissa that's interesting you had fevers too....Chris had a fever of 101-102 for two nights with her blockage; I was wondering if it was a flu but she had no other signs of a virus. Her entire colon was completely backed up too.

Clairebells:

I wonder if her enzymes that she is taking could be causing or adding to her having intestinal blockages?? She may need to change enzymes or lower her dosage......I say this because I was on Creon 20's for many years....and started getting blockages and having to be on Miralax, enulose, stool softeners, and of course Golytely and mag citrate..YUMM..... I went to a new doctor and she pointed to the enzymes as being a possible problem.....I stopped those.......later started taking Ultrase 13 I want to say and the problems went away......I am older...27....but you never know it could be the problem or they could be making the blockages worse....just an idea...good luck.....
