lower carbs

I am curious as to whether or not anyone who is overweight and borderline glucose intolerant has ever tried to lose weight by giving up sugar, bread, pasta and cereal. I know we are supposed to have a lot of calories and a balanced diet, but I am having a difficult time losing weight. I know several people (who do not have CF) who have lost weight fairly comfortably on a diet of protein, fruit and vegetables. It sounds like a pretty healthy way to jump-start weight loss.

First, I just have to ask, are you actually overweight? Most of us are shrimps. I would talk to the dietician at your clinic about specific needs for you. Debbie23 w/ CF

Be careful! I am studying nutrition in school and it does not look like the no/low carb diet is very safe. Its not very good for the heart and its better to eat a variety of things in moderation. Especially whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. I would be sure to ask a dietition whether the CF RD or another before going on that Atkins diet.

to that person, i have the same problem! my problem stems from steroids. and i guess you could say im glucose intolerant as well because my blood tests have been a bit wacky. but anyway, usually people who put on weight from steroids lose the weight eventually when they are taken off them. but for some reason when i stop the steroids, i just never seem to lose the weight! i havent been eating well the past couple of months due to having a bad infection and my weight never seems to drop. in a way its good, because at least i know im not starving my body. but in another way is bad because the weight gain might be a symptom from another problem, that could be serious, and i cant fit into regular clothes. this weight problem has started ever since i was first put on prednisolone. i have long breaks off it, but it never makes a difference.

I, too was what I consider "overweight" a few months ago & was complaining to the Dr about it & he finally shut me up by asking me if I knew how many people w/ CF would love to have my so called "problem". I had gained weight after CFRD was discovered & he wanted me to start insulin. Prior to the insulin, I knew I was glucose intolerent, so had been watching raw sugar intake & lost weight which had him worried, thus the "eat sugar, but take some form of insulin" approach. I am now at what I feel is a good weight. I don't mean to sound like a whiner, but I remember it being harder to breath when I weighed more, especially when I had gas.So, I guess my advise is, ask your CF Dr if cutting out raw sugar (i.e. candy, sweetened cereal, soda, pie, etc) would help. Good Luck<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi! I have heard taht the low carb diets are good for anyone too. My parents were on it and they did lose weight but i'm thankful that for the most part they have stopped the diet. I gained around 12lbs this past fall from being on steroids, and found it hard to breathe. I found out what it was like for "really overweight" people. I mean it was hard to bend over and tie my shoes. I literally couldn't breathe. I couldn't wear my own clothes, i was wearing my stepdtr's clothes and mom bought me some bigger pants with elastic. I have to admit i've been taking diet pills (hydroxycut), eating good meals and exercising and i'm seeing the weight slowly come off. I don't want to lose too much weight, just the weight that i gained last fall. Caren 31w/cf

i know how you feel caren. i have normal clothes and then steroid clothes. and then there the lyingonthefloortogettoyourfeet trick. tacky trackpants lol. its just so hard to control your eating with steroids. you start off thinking 'right, im going to eat sinsibly and exercise, i dont want to put on weight'. but that plan always falls apart for me.Kylie

Kylie,it's pretty bad when a cf'er has to lay on the bed and suck in the tummy in order for us to get our jeans buttoned!! LOL!! Thank goodness for elastic waists! I just got back from my walk, i would have walked longer but it started to rain on me. Not sure how far i walked because i took a different route than i used to last fall. I need to get in the car and drive it to find out how far i walked! The doctors are always saying exercise is really good. So, here i go! I hope it works!! LOLCaren

For everyone who has gained weight on steroids here is something to remember: The extra weight helps boost immune system and lung functions. I think the best thing to do would be to exercise regularly and continue to eat a high calorie diet of a variety of foods. Don't attempt to loose the weight by changing your diet.Debbie23 w/ CF

I actually gained 50 lbs about 2 years ago after I started on an anti-depressant and the birth control shot. And it's easy to say wouldn't you rather be overweight than underweight? When it comes down to it, I agree. I'd rather be a little overweight, but if you have any control over it, you can be inbetween instead of one extreme or another. I lost 40 of the 50 lbs I gained. My doctor was even for it because I was really depressed when I was fat. It's terrible how society can control how girls feel about their bodies. And I don't give a damn about what people think hardly ever... but after being fat, I can be a pretty big girl about my weight. It's disgusting. And I know it. I guess what I'm saying is, it's easy to say to be happy if you're overweight as a CFer because most of us have trouble getting flesh on us... But as the cliche says, it's much easier said than done.
