Lung transplant allocation system--Great news!

Hi all,
I just read this great article in the NYT. It's about how the new allocation system for lungs is making it much, much easier (and faster) for people with CF to get transplants. I was so pumped to read this, even though I already got mine 7 years ago. It is GOOD news. Check it out:

Good to hear about those changes. I don't think smokers who cause their problems should go above someone who never had a choice. The need for lungs should always out-weigh any seniority in list placement.

I agree. I don't even know why smoke induced emphysemic patients are even given the option. Do they have to promise not to smoke post transplant & if so, how many keep that promise?

To some degree i have to agree with the above poster. They( smokers) knew when they started and continued to smoke, the risks involoved and completely ignored them. We dont exactly get that option, nor do those with certain lung cancers and those with pulmonary fibrosis. Now since i cant stand the feeling of not being able to breathe i do have sympathy for those who have emphysema caused by smoking, but i dont think they should EVER be before ANYONE on a list who didnt cause their own lung problem.

just my opinion here but i would be peeved if my lungs went to a smoker or my liver to an alcoholic. though i do know you don't have a choice where your donated organs go. maybe those in charge "should" give us that choice
