Meconium Ileus Equivalent with no obstruction???

My son was admitted yesterday to the hospital after starting projectile vomiting at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. No other symptoms other than gas and fussiness. At first they thought it might be a virus, then pyloric stenosis, then malrotation in the bowel... and now they think it's meconium ileus equivalent- but here's the thing. No blockage showed up. There was an ultrasound and the dye didn't move out of the stomach much, he just vomited it back up. But when they did an upper GI this morning the dye went all the way through???

Everything I've read about meconium ileus equivalent refers to an actual physical blockage- but the way it's being explained to me... there was no blockage. Zeke's intestines just decided not to work normally with peristalsis?

Anybody have any experience with this? We're tired of being jerked around- going from 'yes he needs surgery' to 'no he doesn't' 3 times in the last 24 hours.

DS had some similar issues when he was younger. When he they had him swallow barium, it slowed way down when it got into the small intestines.

When he was 4 months old he was vomiting, was still stooling, though it was very loose. Turned out he had a LOT of stool in the colon and what was coming out, was making it's way around the larger amount of stool. We were instructed to give him milk of magnesia to get things cleared out. We had to do it a few times that first year. Sometimes miralax is prescribed, go lytely. I guess I'd be concerned that they want to do surgery so quickly without trying other methods for relieving the possible blockage.

Well... they are saying no surgery now because there's no blockage. They were saying surgery for the pyloric stenosis or the malrotation of the bowels before they did the GI study that showed the dye going through- which led them to the conclusion that peristalsis must not be working-- which they called meconium ileus eqivalent. I dunno. We're just really confused and frustrated.

Oh Jen, I am so sorry for you all. Is Dr. C back or are you seeing Dr. K? Who is the surgeon? Ranne?

Take care and if you need anything, let me know, okay?
