Miserable, stupid sinuses

So I got a sinus infection. Nothing new about that. But sometimes when I get one and start antibiotics and my sinuses finally start to drain then my throat gets irritated and I start coughing. Its not a very productive cough, but I cough hard and it makes my upper airway and throat raw, painful, and inflamed so that I have to work hard to breathe. I'm not really sick, but I feel terrible and missed a day an a half of work because I can't stop coughing! What can I do??? I can't miss anymore work but I feel horrible and can only sleep about an hour at a time. I have been dozing off all day because I couldn't sleep last night. Help! The weirdest thing is that this doesn't happen every time I get a sinus infection so I never know how bad its going to be.

Have you been using a saline nose spray? If not maybe you could get one and use it every hour or so to loosen the junk and your nose and blow it out - that way there will be less to drain down the back of your throat.

I usually suck on lozenges if my throat hurts badly from coughing. That or I use the chloraseptic spray that numbs the back of your throat - but that stuff is awful tasting, so I usually don't use it unless it is really bad. Also it is best that you cough and get the stuff out anyway instead of letting it drain down the back of your throat and into your lungs or anything.

Also I suck on popsicles. I love the flavorice popsicles - the ones that are the liquid that you have to freeze on your own. I go through a ton of those if and when I have a sore throat. They always seem to numb my throat for a bit so I can get some relief.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

Is it the post nasal drip thats bugging you? (Causing the sore throat and coughing)
My son's docs put him on something called extendryl to dry up the sinuses because the drip was making him cough. But it was mainly due to allergies, not infection. Sorry its all I could think of. And I always loved that chloroseptic spray that numbs the back of your throat when I had post nasal drip problems with a cold. Maybe some nice menthol cough drops. Not the best of suggestions, I don't have a ton of experience with CF. Just thought maybe those could help you get through the work day!

Oh my gosh, very weird. Lindsey beat me to it and her suggestions are almost the same as mine. I swear we must have been typing at the same time. Anyway, sorry to repeat!

I hate that throat spray too, but I might have to get some anyway to make it through work tomorrow. Menthol cough drops are helping some, and so does drinking really cold water. I have been sucking on my albuterol inhaler like its going out of style to keep my airways open and that helps me to at least feel like I'm not gasping for air. I'm probably using it a little too much, but it helps so I don't care, a couple days of overuse isn't going to kill me.

Thanks for you suggestions, I'm just looking for something I haven't thought ofg, but I know there's only so much that can be done.

For sinuses I use this contraption called a neti pot-I posted this somewhere the other day so stop me if you're heard this-
It's a little ceramic dish with a tube on the end, and you fill it with warm salt water and tilt your head, and put one end in your nostril-the gunk and nasties come out the other nostril. It takes getting used to, but it works wonderfully. Also, the salt water drips into your throat, which is good for healing and germs.
A sinus specialist told me about it, you can get them at some drugstores, and most healthfood stores.

Hey- Josh uses a sinus rinse and the yucky stuff drains out as you
use it. some drainage though burt if used regularly it will cleanse
the irritants out. NeilMed Sinus Rinse seems to work the best for
him because the "hole" is bigger. We have tried another
brand but this seems to be the best. Walgreens and walmart carry
it.
