More than the rockets red glare

Sometimes we get caught up in the gaiety of the holiday, and forget to take a moment to ponder the reason for the creation of the holiday. To think that a group of determined, rag-tag farmers stood and fired the shot heard 'round the world, and another group of rag-tag soldiers starved and froze their butts off during winter, in a fight to create a new nation. To know that a group of leading citizens sweated during a hot July summer to create on paper a new nation, and then signed their names--knowing that it meant certain death if they were ever caught. When the phrases "When in the course of human events...and we hold these truths to be self-evident..." become the first words of an infant nation. To imagine countless women bent over their sewing to make a flag for the new nation, and countless other women watching their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands going off to war...some even joined in disguise. To know that we were the first nation to have true democracy for (almost) all, and that that nation would be the longest-lived democracy in the world today...this is what the 4th of July is all about. God, I'm proud to be an American, founded with the blood and history of Freedom Fighters, who were willing to die so that we might live free. Happy Birthday America--Home of the Free, and Land of the Brave!

Thanks for reminding us Terri! Living in the Boston area, and next to Plymouth we are surrounded by signs of the Early Americans and their sacrifices. We too often take it for granted.

Terri, This is a great subject to bring up as 4th of july approaches. I think that many people often forget though we should all remember. My friend let me use poems in a poem book she owns. This is one of them I chose for a school project,

I Will Remember

We should all remember the day our soldiers fought,
Yet some of us forget, though we should all be tought.
Imagine if someone you loved went to war and died,
Then you recieved a letter back, I'm sure you would have cried.
You might even be a soldier, who loved our country dear,
That you would go and fight for us, though you were filled with fear.

Or maybe you're the child, and your father passed away,
Of course you had a father, but that was till today.
Or imagine you're the mother and your son was gone for real,
Then you would have to eat alone every single meal.
Maybe you're the grandma and your first grandchild died,
Wouldn't you feel terrible, you just would have to die.
So rememeber to remember and make sure you don't forget,
You wouldn't want to say something later on you will regret.
