don't give up.  sometimes when we're hurting it is much easier
to put up the wall and withdraw into a shell.  continue to let
him know of your love and concern.  does he have access to
email-maybe chat or im would be easier?

Speaking from personal experience. My bro was down alot too, and yes, there were lots of times he couldn't talk for long, even though he lived with me.
If I can suggest anything to you, send him letters, or cards? Maybe pictures of the two of you together?
I used to bring Mike the craziest of things to the hospital to cheer him up. For example, when he was about 3 or 4 he would run around in his "superman underoos" and sing this old song from the 70's "Elvira". So one day when he was having a particularly bad day, I bought him a pair of superman boxer shorts and brought up the song on cd. We had a good laugh that day.
Even though he may have a hard time talking, try some unusual things to let him know you care and are there to support him. Just a thought!!
Best of of luck to both you and your brother!
