Nebulizers and compressor questions

I travel a lot and would like to get a more portable unit for doing my treatments. I am on Pulmozyme and Tobi. I know that these both have very specific recommendations for the compressor that you should use. Does anyone know of any good, small, preferably quiet, compressors that are OK to use with both of these medications?

Pari now has a really small one called Pari Trek. A little pricey, but very small. Would be just what I'm looking for if it would work. I couldn't find any hints on the Pari website or the Genentech site.

Any advice??

Hi, I have two teenage daughters with CF. We like Pari products and have used them for years. My oldest currently has a Duraneb 3000. It's a portable that has a gel pack battery that is rechargeable or you can use it plugged in. It's not extremely quiet but no loud either, more quiet than the Duraneb 2000 (which of course was before the 3000). My youngest has a Pari Turboboy (well that's what it was called back in Germany, I think it's just Turbo here) Anyhow, it's not a portable one. Lastly the daughter that owns the non-portable one also has the new Pari Trek. We bought it out of pocket for cheerleading camp because it was way smaller than any other (Pari products). There is someone on here that uses it too. I think it's Emily. Not positive though. Anyhow. I asked how she liked it (whomever it was), she's off at college. She loved it, so I bought it for my younger daughter. She doesn't even use her Turbo anymore.

I checked with our home healthcare products supplier (the one our insurance uses) just to see how much it was and it was less (surprise, surprise) than anyplace I found on-line. I believe I paid $216.97 battery pak and all, no tax because I had a prescription. You do however have to be careful about the amount of time you use it though. Because it is smaller it will shut off when it becomes hot. It will not damage the machine but just shuts off to prevent overheating. The manuel says it can be used for 30 minutes of continuous treatment.

My daughter uses it for her Albuterol and Pulmozyme. She doesn't do a inhaled antibiotic regularly. But we have put it to the test this last month as she was put on Tobi (for the 3rd time ever). She was able to get all three in without it stopping. I know that you can add the abluterol solution to Tobi but she didn't do that. We also only use Pari Nebs, except with the Tobi because it makes her choke. We just use an acorn or that Husdson T or was it a sidestream? Anyhow its a sucky neb anyway because it starts to leak after about the second week, even though it has a rubber gasket and it's hard to unscrew.

I too wondered about the delivery aspect of the Pari Trek and was reassured that it was equal to a normal sized machine using a Pari neb. My daughter highly recommends it. The bag is the size of a camera bag. They say the machine with battery attached is about the size of a double deck of cards. I'd say the size of those bigger "Old Maid" cards. Still it's small. It came with the battery, charger, plug for the wall, and car plug. So far I give it a 5 star rating and we've had it since mid June. Oh, and quiet, is it quiet. It can be used for Pulmozyme because it is not ultrasonic. Guess that's about it. Hope I've helped.

Your run down of the compressors was great but one thing you said I'd like more info on-can you mix albuterol and TOBI with out losing any benefit of the treatment? We've been told to do albuterol first, chest PT, then TOBI or Colistan. What a time saver mixing would be!

I have the Pari Trek, and I really like it. I have tried other ones in the past and this is my favorite. It is so small and so fast. It's great. I can do Pulmozyme in under 10 mins. I don't have the car/battery charger because I don't really need that, but I'm very pleased with my neb. I would recommend it.

Albuterol and Tobi (or Colistan) do two different things for the body. Get you lubbed up and help to move it out. I don't think mixing them would be advised. Besides we're not sure what kind of chemical reaction we'd get if you mixed them (I'm thinking Albuterol and Colistan in this case). I think that's why they always want you to rinse a neb out after a treatment. I hope this helps! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi sorry I goofed. You don't mix albuterol solution with TOBI. It's Colistin we were told we could mix the Albuterol with (after it's mixed with the sterile water). But definantly get permission from your doctor first. And if they tell you different please let us know. It wouldn't be the first time I've encountered it. The NEED to chew or not to chew ADEKs. One CF clinic said it didn't matter another said it was a must.

Yes, Pari Trek is the one! We found the cheapest priced one at APRIA, if you have them in your area. It works great, and if you get the complete kit you can use it anywhere.
