Noises / Iv's / coughing

I didnt know how to title this thread so i write all of my complaints in the topic . Let me start by saying i was on iv's about a month and a half ago because i was running fevers and coughed up some blood. After two weeks of home iv's i felt much better and the bleeding ceased (YAY!!). But about a week after i came off of the iv ( i was on my regular cocktail of 3 oral antibiotics), i started to notice i was coughing up much more mucus and it was easy to come out ( no complaints there). I normally dont cough up much mucus at all in a days time. But it was becoming double the amount ,and yet i still i wasnt concerned at all since , i was feeling pretty good , no hemoptysis and no fevers. Then slowly but surely i started having low grade fevers which are notorious when you have b.cepacia. But i was also getting out of breath when i walked, so of coarse i called my nurse and my doctor prescribed home iv's again. Now one of the main things that i noticed that concerns me most is the noises coming from my lungs when i breath out. I have had crackle sounds for a while now ( when i breath in) and when im sick its worse and when im well its almost non-existant. But the sounds i am hearing now are louder and more like a squeaky door opening ( when i breath out). I dont recall ever hearing this much noise from my lungs ever before, and usually when i hear it , i use my flutter and cough out the culprit. But it always seems to keep coming back at some point. Usually when i go on iv's within a week, i feel better, which i do but its been 2 weeks tomorrow and i am still hearing these noises and i am very uncomfortable about it and hate to think i will hear this crap all the time from now on. I already called my nurse and told her i definitely need another week or so of iv's till this goes. Has anyone had any experiences with this? If so did it go away? Maybe my doctor will change the iv antibiotics i am on to get a better grip on whatever is causing this. I hate when new/ odd things start happening.

Diane,
Sorry you're having such a crummy time right now. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I actually RARELY feel much better after IV's for more than a week or so. Usually, my FEV1 is a little higher on IVs and then within a week, I'm generally back to baseline (even with 3 weeks of 3 meds!)... So, I understand your frustration and feel it every time I'm off IVs.

Anyway, I do hear the crackles and whistles on occasion when breathing, and they've told me its due to my asthma component. Have you ever been tested for asthma? I think the whistling, creaky sound can sometimes happen with wheezing from asthma. May be an environmental influence causing it. Don't know. I hope you get the answers you seek though.

I feel similar. I've been on IV's twice since Jan. and the latest was about two weeks ago. As soon as I stopped the IV's I started getting congested. Now, like you I have the crackling and am coughing up tons of crap and it comes up really easy. I'm short of breath too and, but I felt fine while on the IV's. I'm getting really frustrated with this. Prior to Jan. I hadn't had IV's since 1988. All of a sudden I'm sick and can't get well. I don't know about low grade fevers I've only checked once during the last week and 98.6 which is about 1 degree higher than usual but not especially high.

allergies are my 1st thought.

all of a sudden, out of no where, i developed severe allergies at age 9. they thought all the coughing and wheezing etc was my CF. they were wrong.

I was allergic to the horses I was riding daily, the cat I had in my home, and the dust mite feces that I was breathin in 9 hours a night while I lay in my bed.

As soon as I got my allergies under control, my CF has been pretty stable. Rarely any wheezing or tight chest.

Go get allergy shots. And not a blood draw to check for IgE.... get skin tested for EVERYTHING. Allergies can develop at any point in life.

Perhaps you have an excess amount and after a while it will go away with some good treatments.

Can you take Advair?

Amy,

Good point. I often feel congested and SOB when I clean and dust, and that IS because a skin test found me allergic to dust years ago. Makes perfect sense to test for this.

Thank you everyone for your replies...............
I have been tested for allergies years ago and i am allergic to quite a bit, but i dont believe this to be allergy related since there is fever involved. I've never had any fevers from my allergies before. I am also on Zyrtec so that should take care of the most of them.

Risa, I am on Advair. I have been using it for about a year and a half almost. It has helped greatly with what my Dr. called exercise induced asthma. I just have so much more mucus these past few weeks and i am not used to it.
