I am not happy with my childs local cf clinic and would like to have a second opinion , but would have to go out of state. Has anyone done this and if so how did you follow up on care ?

We have switched several times mostly because of moves.

We did recently switch from a clinic 2 hrs. away to one that is 3 1/2 hrs. away. The drive is not good but worth the better care in our opinion. Most of our follow-up is on the phone if something comes up. Otherwise we make the drive every 3 months for the qtrly visit. We also go to the clinic where our son was diagnosed every couple of years to get their opinion on what we are doing (enzymes, etc.)

I am in the same boat as the original post. I, too would have to go 2.5 hours away to another clinic.
I don't know what to do either because what if I would ever have to go to the hospital and it's 2.5 hours away from my family! It's a hard predicament to be in, especially if the CF Clinic is so small that there is only 1 doctor to pick from!

I just wanted to throw my thought in here...I'm 31 and have always been 2 hrs away from my CF clinic..even as a child. I go to St.Louis...and it is the nearest one to me. But....I also believe that it is a very good clinic and I am being well taken care of. I would drive longer if I had to...to get the best care! To me...the drive is worth it to keep me well! Take care all!

I travel 7 hours each way to get to UNC Chapel Hill for clinic appointments, every 3 months. I consider it a worthwhile investment in what I believe is the best care my child can get anywhere. He was diagnosed at this clinic at 3weeks old when we lived 2.5 hours away. We then moved 4 hours away, with a satelite CF clinic in town but opted to continue care with UNC. We are now in Atlanta and although I know there is comparable care in this area, I can not replace the rapport and trust my child feels with this DR. In a recent biography he wrote for school, he writes Dr Retsch-Bogart is my favorite person. He makes me feel better and although sometimes I get needles he always makes me laugh. He has become like one of our family. I encourage all to seek out that quality care. A Dr that listens but is proactive and aggressive. One that makes allowances for a kid being a kid but also puts his foot down when necessary. An example I can give you is when Ryan is due for blood work but has been relatively healthy...he is able to wheel and deal with the Dr and postpone bloodwork until the next time. When the next time comes Doc puts his foot down when the wheeling and dealing begins. We are a team, the clinic, my child and this family striving for the same results. We have a relationship based on honesty, trust and perserverance. We also know the importance of a good local Dr. With each move we have partnerd with a Dr in the local community for basic care. However for all hospitalizations and clinic visits we opt for the long road trip. Good Luck in finding the one!

Switching can be very scary, but it can also be a life-saver. I switched dr's within the hospital and still wasn't satisfied so then I switched to a different hospital all together. It was the best decision I could have made. Luckily, I am within an hour of both.
For the travel expenses, do you have a local CF chapter? Ours (which I am part of) is able to annually give about $400 for traveling expenses. Maybe try to contact your local United Way to get their oppinion of financial help. I know it's not a great answer but perhaps it could help a little. Kelli w/cf

Hi Tina,

We also go to UNC and we love it. My daughter sees a different doctor though and we've only been three times now. I'm excited about meeting Dr. Retsch-Bogart after all the wonderful things your son said about him. I feel for you having to drive so far........luckily, we are only 15 mins away from there.

Take care! Amy
