NuvaRing or PCOD

Ok, so recently I just started the NuvaRing (it's a form of birth control for those of you who are not familiar with it) and as soon as I stop it, I should get my period and then start it again exactly one week later. Well...tomorrow marks the week I start it up again and auntie flow hasn't come yet (there's no chance I'm pregnant either so I know that's not the case). Has anyone experienced irregularity while using BC, or atleast within the first month of using it? Also, my mom has Poly Cystic Ovary Disease...I know that can be hereditary, but she's the only one in my family with it and for some reasom I didn't think it was really possible to have it with cf (at the moment I have no idea where I got that from). Is there anyone on here with these sorts of problems or with PCOD? I'm planning on calling the doc this week but I'm getting a little worried and still have a bit of the weekend to wait out and figured I'd see if anyone had some input.

My daughter is also using NuvaRing -- this has not happened to her, but I just asked her and she said that she recalls the doctor telling her that there is a possibility of that happening with the first cycle while the body adjusts to the hormones. Oh, as I'm typing this my daughter just looked it up on line and she found a doctor quoted as saying that it is common for some women to skip their periods while on NuvaRing, especially if their periods were light before they went on, it can reduce the amount of build up in the uterine lining. My daughter's periods were very heavy before, now they are light ~ but, yes, I would for sure check with your doctor on Monday for sure.

Ok, my daughter looked on the NuvaRing website and it states that it is normal for women to miss their period. Here is the link to the PDF on their website.

Whoa! Calm down, missing periods or light periods-or irregularity is common on any birth control. I've been on NuvaRing 2 years-in the beginning I had really light periods, like just spotting for a day, and I had one week with no period.

Call the doctor anyway-be sure. But you're young, and the hormones could just be out of whack and trying to figure themselves out.

PCOS comes in varying degrees. My sister has it and I've just recently begun sseing symptoms in myself. If it is that, don't worry about it. Treatment includes birth control, which you are already on.

I have been on birth control since I was 13 (my 1st period lasted 28 days....yes lasted 28 days long...and my 2nd was 21 days... needless to say, I was completely anemic).

At about age 19 my period totaly stopped. For 11 months. I would go off the pill, and no period would come. I was not sexually active so there was no chance of pregnancy. My gyn told me that after a while of being on the pill, you can just not build up any uteran lining - therefore you have nothing to shed.

Just to be sure it wasn't my CF, they took me off the pill for 6 months. Good times - my crazy, long periods came back. But at least they knew it wasn't my CF and just the pill causing me not to have a period at all.

I would check with your gyn - but just know that there are people out there who just don't get a period from time to time while on the pill.

to have a "period" there has to be enough hormonal activity to build up the blood in the uterine lining so that it can be released when the hormone (pill, patch, NuvaRing) is taken away. Women who have trouble with BV (bacterial vaginosis) may find that the Nuva Ring helps - but women also may experienced increased vaginal discharge.
I am curious about the experience of Cf women and the Nuva Ring.

I've been using the NuvaRing for several years now, and when I first began using it my periods were much more irregular or didn't happen at all, but eventually got on schedule. I wouln't be too worried about it.

How do you like it? I love using the Nuvaring...one less pill to worry about, keeps my mood balanced, easy to use....had you used a different type of BC prior to the nuvaring?

yeah, I absolutely love it! it's sooo easy to use and takes the worry of meds interacting with it since it doesn't have to be digested and then absorbed in the bloodstream and then make it's way through a bunch of glands before it gets to where it's actually supposed to be. I hadn't been on any other form of BC and my gyn suggested this to me very first time I brought BC up at a visit...I'd recommend it to anyone!!
