OT-Sore throat

I'm on day #6 of a severe throat. However, it isn't the typical swollen lymph nodes, red inflammed inside/back of throat... there is a little swelling and very light inflammation, but where it really hurts is about 1/2 way down my throat.

It's like something is out of wack about 1/2 way down my throat and everytime I swallow, I can feel it wacking against the front of my throat.

My primary care doctor thinks that my throat is so inflammed that it's "knocked things out of order" in my throat and that things aren't operating smoothly like they normally do. I haven't eaten since friday and I am starving but it hurts to swallow so bad I end up in tears.

I went to the ER yesterday and all they did was give me some toradol (didn't help) and dilaudid (narcotic) which knocked me out.

Has anyone else had a sore throat like this before? What is it, how did you remedy it?

I'm thinking I should ask to go see an ENT.... I'm desperate, thanks

Hey Julie, Did they run strep test or a throat culture on you are the ER. Did they notice what your tonsils looked like? Are you running a fever?

I always get a throat spray that numbs when my throat is really sore....

Hope you feel better

did anyone do any imaging? x-ray or CT scan? maybe you have a growth of some sort?

I don't understand a doctor saying something could be knocked out of order -- seems like a strange statement to me....it's not like things are going to move around in there! Swollen yes, but changed in the order...I don't think so.

Take a look at this page - it has a pretty good diagram of the throat - maybe you can pinpoint what area is bothering you.

Have you tried any anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen?

I had tonsilitis last month and even swallowing my own saliva was so painful I would cry. I kept a spit cup with at all times. I was put on Augmentin. I was also given a dose of IV antibiotics when I went to the ER for it (my throat almost swelled shut) and sent home with vicodine. The vicodine took the edge off enough for me to be able to eat soft, cold foods (apple sauce, jello, ice cream). I'm suprised that since this is day 6 they haven't given you an antibiotic.
