Ouch...painful BM's

I have been having this problem for quite some time. A little background...in the last 2 1/2 years, I have doubled my enzyme doses. I used to be at 2 enzymes with meals...Ultrase MT20...then went to three and four pretty quickly. I just had been having a lot of problems with digestion and it not really happening (if you catch my drift). So I upped the doses, with the doctors advise of coure. So even more recently I have noticed that with 4 enzymes, my BM's got very hard and painful. I tried experimenting, went down to three and they were hardly formed. So then I spoke with the doctor again and got some smaller dose Ultrase. So then (like a month ago) I started taking three MT20's and one MT12 with meals. It worked for a while.

Now I have started to have very hard and painful BM's again. Its lasted a little over a week now. I dont know if it is still side effects from my sinus surgery and IV's (surgery was two weeks ago and I finished IV's about 12 days ago). Before the IV's I was on Zyvox and had very soft BM's because that med is harsh on my stomach. I dont know what else to try. I am again trying to go down on enzymes to three again, but so far (two days) its not doing that much.

Can we develop a resistance or tolerance to our enzymes (like with abx) to the point where we would need to try a different brand? Ultrase has always worked well for me, I am at a good weight and mostly digest my food well. Should I ask to switch to a different enzyme or should I try some over the counter (miralax) laxatives? Its not like I am constipated, I am still going, its just very painful.

****UPDATE*****
I finally talked to the doctor, I guess when I called Wednesday night they didnt get the message, so I got a call back on Thursday. I talked to the nurse first and told her everything. It was a good thing I had called though, because I woke up at 330 in the morning Thursday with HORRIBLE gas pains (I usually get them around my period) but these were EXTREME. Well once I went to the bathroom, it was better, but I was up for two hours before that with the pain. I didnt think I would be able to go to work, but I took some motrin and felt better.

So then after I told the nurse all of this, the painful going and the gas pains, she was like yea that kinda sucks. I was like yup. Just when I get my lungs and sinuses under control, my digestion goes wacky...w/e. So the doctor gave me two options, either switch to Creon enzymes, since sometimes the doses may be a bit different, but he also said I could try LACTULOSE...which is a liquid laxative type drug. It doesnt make you go like crazy, but should get better. So I have taken two doses so far, and I am still having some gas pains, and I have only gone to the bathroom once, but it felt so much better. I am going back to take four Ultrase MT20's since they seemed to work, so with the lactulose I should be back on track. Thanks for the suggestions!

Some things that might help:

Sea salt
glyconutrients
coconut oil
bananas
fruit juices (especially apple-banana, a flavor from Juicy Juice)
Gelatin (put a packet in a glass of hot water, add a little fruit juice and drink it)
Magnesium supplements

Good luck with this.

Ouch !! Your poor hiney <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

I have the opposite problem. I'm usually in the bathroom too many times to count throughout the day, Blah..

Have you discussed it w/ you GI Dr. ? Maybe you can get a stool softener..

I know the C/F Dr.s have many samples of enzymes, maybe you can ask to try something different..

I hope you get some relief soon. It stinks (no pun intended) to have poop problems..

Take care Caitlin and keep us posted ~ <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

Do your meals always contain the same amount of fat? I change my dosis of enzyms with every meal depending on its fat.
