PA Survival Time

So I knew PA was a virulent bug. But I had no idea what longevity is has.

PA survives in mucus on dry surfaces for 8 days.

I'm just thinking of the clinic waiting rooms and exam rooms and PFT rooms that I hang out in. What are the chances that there's a small beed of mucus somewhere with PA growing on it and I touch it????

Just disgusts me and reminds me how important it is to practice good hygene around other CFers!!!!!

Just goes to show how bad hospitals are. If you can get away with it, do home care when you are sick. Sadly my indemnity policies don't cover that.

PA is one of the most resilient bacteria I know of. You can culture it from distilled water. In fact, it can be cultured from anti-microbial soap. Really stubborn thing.

Yuck. Last time we went to the local CF clinic I got into an argument with a nurse who was going to put us in a different exam room -- I got to the door and there were already people in there -- I refused to switch rooms and we almost walked out. I also had concerns that day because I didn't see the nurse wipe down the finger pulse-ox gizmo with alcohol before using it on our son. My husband laughed at me before we headed out to the clinic 'cuz I was going to bring my OWN sani-wipes to wipe down surfaces in the room we're assigned to.

At our clinic, too they have a community waiting room and have patients so see the different doctors in individual rooms -- we refuse and I believe we're one of the very few families who have their own room. Liza

Speaking of this, what do you guys use for drinking water?

I drink good ol' Osaka City tap water (Yuck!). At least it improved over the last few years.
MY question is if the PA will survive an alchohol rub, or if it dies after a particular temperature! For example, the body increases in temp. to fight off colds by killing the germs that cannot handle the high temps, but how does PA handle that...just something to add to the sanitary (and wearing a mask, gloves and carrying a great big container of sani-wipes!)
