partial lung collapse

hey all

I've been having a pain in my upper back on the left side for quite some time now (I'm talking like a month, maybe more). I thought it was a pulled muscle from coughing or something like that but it hasn't gone away. I've been wheezing A LOT in my left lung since I noticed the pain (maybe more). Sometimes with coughing fits a ton of stuff comes up that feels like it came primarily from my left lung, and sometimes nothing will budge (it's all colorless though). Could this be a partial collapse even though it's hurt for a while now? I wouldn't say the pain is excrutiating or anything. It's dull and kind of annoying, especially when I cough. I only get some temporary relief when I take Ibuprofen or use a heating pad. I'm going to make a doctor's appt soon, but I just wanted some input on whether or not this is a typical feeling and you all think it could be atelectasis or if it's just a pulled muscle kind of issue like I originally thought.

Is it sensitive to touch at all? If not, it is likely not a pulled muscle or bruised rib. Too me that pain usually indicates the on set of pneumonia.

Are you short of breathe at all? When you bend forward or lean back does it feel like something moving in your chest? I'm not sure what a partial feels like, I recently had a total collapse, but I have asked what a partial felt like before and Lindsey (coltsfan) told me she had a partial and didnt know it. She didnt have any pain, just unexplained shortness of breath. She went to the doctor and got an xray and found out. Since you are having pain and wheezing, it could be infection. Make that doctor's appt soon. Good luck.

Hi Erin,

I'd recommend getting that checked out if you haven't already. I had similar pain in my shoulder when I was in Australia, but I just assumed it was a shoulder injury from swimming or that I was strained from carrying heavy bags around all day, being a tourist. It was just a kind of annoying, aching pain. When I got home to Canada they took an X-ray and saw that my entire right apex had collapsed. We tried to reinflate it with a bronchoscopy and some IVS but it didn't work. I lost that lobe because I had no idea what it was.

So, get an x-ray. Get it checked out, and you'll prevent, hopefully, the loss of a valuable lobe of love.
