PICC before sinus surgery?? Please help!

My son Aidan, aged 4, is having his third sinus surgery in 4 weeks. The past two, he required a PICC line before the surgery because the infection was so bad and they wouldn't operate before some of it was cleared. He was actively sick both times so I understood the PICC.

His last CT was still horrible but now he is on Zithromax three times weekly and is not currently sick with a sinus infection. He still needs surgery b/c his one side is totally blocked. His CF doc wants IV meds before the surgery again. Does this seem necessary if he only cultures Staph and is not actively sick?? I dread putting him through another PICC line. 3 already and he just turned 4 years old? Plus he's considered healthy?

awww poor little guy. He must be so miserable! My heart goes out to you both. I have been in this situation before. I wasn't unwell in terms of chest infection however I was getting horrible sinus headaches. The reason my doc wanted me to have a pic put in was he wanted me to have anti's for a few days before (2days) and after (7days) the op because the anesthetic can cause chest issues (thickening of mucus) and to have the optimal chance of the surgery working he wanted to get any bugs (both sinus and chest) before they turned into infection. the surgery (and given one side is completely blocked this might be more possible) can also 'stir-up' bugs.

I can sort of understand your docs thinking but I also understand your reasoning. arhh so hard! I think if it was me I would go the anti's because after he has been through so much already you really want this one to get it all ok. I know thats not what you want to hear<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> I hope this is helpful and hope it all goes the best it can.

my center will not allow any kind of surgery without IV's abx.....the risk for infection is too high.

Thanks so much to both of you. I am beginning to understand more about the reasons why they think it is necessary. I didn't realize that some centers always require it for surgery. Thanks again, I'll think more about it.
