Nightwriter- I agree. The PICC is traumatic and this cycle of sinus infections and surgeries stinks. We are aggressive with all his treatments. We do an hour of the VEST a day, Mucomyst, Zithromax, sinus rinses, nasal steroids. We've had him to Minnesota to see Dr Warwick among others. Nobody can give us an answer to stop the cycle.

He has been blood AND skin tested for allergies to over 40 things- ALL negative except one rare tree slight allergy. We have a top notch air purifying system installed into our heating system, we do the allergy covering thing and nothing works.

The CF nurse said that they need a cleaner field to work in. We know he has infection even though he is not currently exhibiting symptoms. I give up!

Megan, mom to Aidan CF and Gavin, no CF (PGD/IVF)

Hi Megan,

Well, I never give up. And I'm not giving up on you and Aidan. Let me explain what I know about allergies. I'm going to pass on what I've learned from my doctor. She once told me they don't do skin tests until the age of 6, but even so...

First, Aidan was tested for 40 things. Think about it. 40 things in the world. Not a lot of things, right. These days they have tests for hundreds of things - even spices. You can be allergic to anything! They can't test for everything. He may have severe chemical sensitivities, but there are no tests for these. And unless your doctor specializes in this area, they will think it's stupid to even suggest this. Believe me, I know.

So this may take detective work on your part. And let's say Aidan's tests come up negative for 400 things, something is making his nasal passages swell. Then they trap the mucus with the bacteria and you're back in this horrible cycle.

It doesn't have to be a true allergy. It can be an irritant and this will give him a reaction that's just like an allergen. For example, he may not be allergic to pollen, but if he's out when the pollen count is high, it's irritating and the nasal passages (and airways) swell. My doctor has figured out the oddest triggers for people. She's usually the last stop for people who have gone to a million doctors, or are in the ER every week, or are told they have psychological problems because the doctors think they are crazy for complaining all the time.

This is what you have to do. When the sinus problem first started, was there anything in your house, or the use of any new products brought in? And I mean anything. My doctor told me about 3 brothers whose symptoms disappeared after it was discovered the mother was using natural products that had lavender oil.

So...did you move? Buy new furniture? New mattress? Carpets (remove if you them)? Walk from room to room. Do you use products with perfumes or fragrances (stop today if you do). Do you clean with harsh chemicals including things like Ajax? Anybody else in your household sick? Foods with pesticides, preservatives, dyes? New car, RV? Daycare or pre-school? Is it possible you have mold or does he play in a basement? What is his diet like? Have you tried rotating his foods? Do you buy organic fruits and vegetables without pesticides? Does he have food with chemical preservatives, dyes, artificial anything?

I'm giving you a start here. There is so much more. As someone who hates needles, I really feel for this little boy. I can tell by your post, that you are committed to finding out why this is happening. But I assure you, there IS a reason. And when you get to the source, the infections will stop, I urge you to check out the other things I mentioned in my other post. And don't be afraid to get second opinions. He's had too many surgeries without the doctors making any headway.
