I have been coughing up blood since I was diagnosed in 96. I am 25 years old and the blood comes and goes. For the past year and a half I have noticed that I cough up blood around the same time as my period. It has happened the last 3 months consectively and it happened again tonight. My period is due any day. Last month it was the same day that I started. My doctor told me to keep a diary of it so we can look at it over time. Does anyone else have this problem or have noticed it around a specific time of the month or year?

i'm 21, female, with CF, and i've been having hemophtysis for exactly 4 years now. i didn't notice it being related to anything, like time of the year or my period. my doctor told me that coughing up blood usually means either a lung infection or that i coughed so much i tore up a small blood vessel. having hemophtysis and period at the same time is annoying... it happened to me once or twice and i felt really irritated - i felt like i was bleeding from every hole in my body <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Lois, 21 w/CF, Israelboys_dont_cry_1982@yahoo.com

I have had small episodes of hemoptysis for about 18 years now . Also had some major episodes that required 2 embolizations. I was told that birth control helps with this problem so i tried it and noticed a decrease in episodes. I heard that estrogen keeps the blood vessels pliable and prevents them from breaking. Kind of makes a bit of sense that right before your period you may experience hemoptysis. I have also noticed that, a few days before my period is when i am most likely to have a small episode. I am on vitamin K ( mephyton) once a day to help with it . But none the less, coughing up blood can be scary.~ Diane / 39 / diabetes / b.cepacia
