Predinosne raising Blood Sugar

Has anyone noticed that when they take a steriod it raises their blood sugar very very high. I dont have CFRD, actually my sugars are usually low but I took 20mg of predinosne and 6 hours later it was 270. I was shocked. Anyone else have this?

My son has problems with this all the time. He was actually on insulin a few years back when he had to take predisone on a regular basis. It seems that after awhile his body became use to the predisone and now the only time he has a big affect is when he was to take it IV.

Sure, many times blood sugar issues occur with high dose prednisone. I recommend talking with your CF care center. 270 is mighty high for someone that does not have CFRD.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

I've never been on it, and I have CFRD. My mum however used to take Prednison, and it gave her diabetes. She's able to control it with diet and insulin pills.

I develped diabetes from prednisalone, my sugars were 29.7 (dont know what that converts to) which is VERY high. Never had cfrd before this. My prednisalone has reduced but the diabetes is with me for life now (due to other meds I am since on). So to answer your question...YES

my doctors say i got cfrd because it was inevitable and the prednisone i was on, for 6 months, just enduced it. i think it created it. now im off the prednisone after weening off it over a month, and my blood sugars are still high, and i still technically have cfrd, but its gotten better

when i was on prednisone and diagnosed, i started insulin right away and my blood sugars were high until i got the right dosage. more hten a few times my meter couldnt even register my numbers ("over 600, unmeasurable.")

i would say talk to your doctor, prednisone will play with your sugars, but make sure you have a plan on how long your going to keep him on the steriods. just take precaution is all im saying i guess. but at the same time, prednisone can be a miracle drug- so dont take him off it unless he thinks its a problem. maybe stick with low sugar foods, no candy and soda, while hes on it? keep the free sugars away? wow that was a ramble, hope it makes sense. good luck.
