I just got off the phone with my doctor again, and he put me back on Tobi and Zyvox. I am a little concerned because last time I was on both of these I had a bad case of thrush, that kinda didnt go away (ok, maybe b/c i didnt take the meds as much as i should have...lol). I asked if there was anything I could take to prevent that from happening this time and the nurse I talked to kinda shrugged it off. She told me to just go back on the clotrimazole again.

I am wondering about everyone's experience with probiotics here. I am thinking of going out and getting some of that to help me. What kinds do you use? Where do you get them? And are there side effects or does it interact with any med you are currently on?

Thanks!

hey caitlin,

i am getting counciling right now from a woman who specializes in holistic nutrition. she is using me for a master's thesis on CF and nutrition. she recommended to me two brands:

Complete Probiotics (for this product, suggested usage is 2-3 capsules 3x/day before meals for the first 10 days to maximize balance in the colon. Then, reduce your use to one cap per day.

All Flora by New Chapter: 2 caps (one in morning upon waking; one in evening before bed; Try for empty stomach)

you should be able to get these at Whole Foods, or a nutrition store, or online. they are not cheap, but i think they are worth it.

probiotics are best taken on an empty stomach so they make their way down into your digsetive tract. i take mine now right when i get up and before bed.

i just started taking probiotics the last three weeks, since i've been on one IV antibiotic and two orals. i plan to keep on taking them from now on, not just when i'm sick. i take the probiotic along with my antibiotic first thing in the morning. ideally, they should be spaced out, but i think it being taken on an empty stomach is more important.

ANYWAY, i definitly think they havehelped because normally i get a yeast infection right away on abx and this time it was 2.5 weeks before i got one. i was also around my sick boyfriend and was sure i would catch his cold, but i didn't! i strongly recommend them.

good luck! there might be some other, old threads about this, too.

"Culturelle" brand lactobacillus capsules have always worked well for my son - though I've got to admit wondering if brand names really matter. I've bought culturelle at our local drugstore chain.

AZO Yeast (the cranberry variety is an additional plus because it's good for preventing UTIs) and acidophilus. Both are OTC, easy to get, fairly cheap, and work well.
