Productive cough after IV antibiotics, is this normal?

Hi there,

My daughter was in the hospital fro 3-3 until 3-10. She has pneumonia. They started her on IV antibiotics on the 5th. She received a broviac line (she is still to little for a port or picc line) and has been on IV antibiotics for the past two weeks (merrem). We left the hospital on the 10th and she finishes her antibiotics tomorrow morning. My question is she has started having coughing bouts that wake her and she's breathing a bit fast once again. Is this normal? Is it the mucus breaking up? We have been seeing the doctor pretty much on a weekly basis since Jan.25th (when she was first diagnosed) but only have a nurses visit on Thurs. (we don't see the doctor until the following week) I'm going to call the doctors office tomorrow anyway but being as this is our first time on IV antibiotics I don't really know what to expect. She just sounds horrible when she coughs and nothing is coming out. (Do you think she could be swallowing it?) If anyone has any ideas or insights that would be wonderful. I just feel like she is so young and already having these kind of issues, I'm really scared.

That's tough, especially with a little one.

I think it's either that the sputum is breaking up or they chose the wrong antibiotics for the bacteria she has in her lungs.

It's hard to get a good sputum culture from little ones.... so perhaps she has bacteria in her lungs that they aren't aware of so this is why the cough is continuing.

I wouldn't hesitate to call the doctor and press for a bronchoscopy to figure out what's going on.

Best of luck.
