hi there my daughter age 5 has just picked up this bug we r in the middle of trying to get ride of it
Its been about 5 weeks now and every cough swab they have taken it is not apearing ........i was just wondering if anyone could share anything about there experiances of this ...........I am so worried about this as she hasnt picked it up before.
And realy it is just bringing it home how bad this cf is .........help

Pseudomonas is a regular bug that eventually all CFers pick up. There are much worse things out there that you can pick up. I cultured Pseudo when I was 5 and it went away. Then I cultured it around 12 I think, and I've had it ever since. That being said - I still have minor lung involvement, so the fact that I have pseudo really isn't an indicator of how severe your CF can get. I know its a scary time right now as you've never dealt with it, but it is a common bug that we all eventually colonize (stays in our lungs permanently). My pseudo flairups only happen about twice a year now, maybe 3 if I'm having a bad year. I'm sure there are a lot more people on here who can share their experience with you, but like I said - pseudo is common among CFers and really isn't a big thing to worry about. MRSA or B. Cepacia are the big bugs you need to worry about - b. cepacia especially. Hope this has helped you out somewhat.

I'm a bit confused... you said she has been trying to get rid of pseudomonas for 5 weeks -- but then you also say every cough swab is "not appearing" ? If I understand correctly, then that usually means either the pseudomonas is gone and she is fighting some other kind of bug that is not showing on the lab reports or they are not finding any pseudomonas in her throat anymore but it could still be in her lungs.

So, by cough swab do you mean a throat culture? They have her cough, then stick a long Q-tip in the back of her throat, send that to the lab -- they are telling you the pseudomonas is or is not still there?

Have they done a sputum sample? She coughs up mucus into a sterile cup and they send that to the lab. This is the better way of finding out what is growing in the lungs.

Did she get treated with Tobi or Cipro?

They say that it is looking good as it is getting picked up on her cough swabs but they dont want to say that it has defanetly gone as it could be lying low and that cough didnt contain it .u see
she is on a 3 month course of colamisen if this doesnt not get rid of it then it would be ivs

i have had pseudo for as long as i can remember... on a webcast from the cystic fibrosis foundation, they said that 80% of cfers have it by the time they are 18. there are a lot of different strains. generally, it is "good" if your strain is susceptable to a lot of antibiotics.

My daughter had pseudomonas picked up in her cough swab when she was 10 months old. On colomycin via nebuliser for 3 months and cough swabs were clear. Pseudo showed up again almost exactly 12 months later. Back on Colomycin again and been on it since last October. Had 2 cough swabs clear then one showed Pseudo again so she is on Colomycin now for another 12 months.

my sons consultant told me they test blood for anti bodies after three monthes on colomycin. my son came up clear<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
