Hiya, Charlotte here. Only joined yesterday. I have two daughers - eldest 4 years and youngest 2 years. Does anyone know much about Pseudo. My daughter was diagnosed with CF at 6 weeks old - she picked up Pseudo at 10 months old, and picked up again exactly 12 months later.

Hi Charlotte,

I have 2 sons w/cf and one has pseudo in every culture. The other one shows it only once every few years (which I think is totally weird since they share the same living space). Our doctor says it may be there all the time but it only show up on random tests. Or it might just come and go. It is frustrating like so many other cf things that there is no one answer to questions. I feel like my kids are guinea pigs sometimes. They had been doing TOBI nebs every other month, but now both boys are on amikacin nebs for a different bug.

Charlotte,

Pseudmonas is the thorn in our paw. There are many "types" of pseudomonas which is why doctors are always culturing us. The "goal" doctors try with us is to keep bacterial infections to a minimum, which in turn keeps inflammation to a minimum. One of the problems with us is that we are kind of human petry dishes, bacteria love us. So in order to combat that we take twice as much antibiotic for twice as long as "healthy" people to try to kill it. I would recommend that you ask for your bacterial culture and sensitivity reports so you can "help track" what bugs your child is culturing. This also will keep your doc's on their toes when prescribing the correct antibiotics.
If you have any specific questions just let me know.

I've cultured pseudo now for about 16 years now. Like Luke said, it is the thorn in our paws. Usually we are on TOBI once month on, one off, or they may try inhaled Colymycin or oral Cipro. It all depends on what works for your kids. What works for some, does not work for all. All I can say is, be very dilligent with physio so that the pseudo has a less chance of spreading too much. Once you're cultured pseudo a few times, you cannot get rid of it, but it does go dormant every once and a while. Sometimes you will culture it, and sometimes not because it has gone to "sleep". If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!
