Question

I had an episode last night where suddenly I felt that the only space I had to breathe with ended at the bottom of my neck and I was very hot too & it scared the begeezies out of me.
I only had this happen one other time approx 9 years ago....where all the sudden my throat tightens up & all air is gone & it was right after I got done eating a salad at a restaurant & I assumed it was a food allergy. Last night this happened approx 5 minutes after I finished eating too???
I guess my question is: does this happen frequently to any of you?
I'm assuming it's CF related but wonder if it could be an allergic reaction...just looking for some feedback.
A couple of puffs of albuterol inhaler followed by a Xopenex treatment seemed to open me up and approx 10 minutes later I was fine (just shakey from albuterol over load!)
I suppose it could be an anxiety/panic attack but I really haven't been under a whole lot of stress lately.
I will be out most of today but will check any responses this evening. Thanks

It could still be a food allergy. You never know what ingredient (if ever so small even) might trigger something. Since the treatments seemed to work even if it was one, it wasnt as bad as it felt otherwise you wouldnt have needed something like Benadryl (I would think). Definitely something to keep track of to see if there is an actual trigger or if it is some type of panic attack! Glad it passed!

I get panic attacks very often-I have had them for 4 years now. And the oddest thing is that 7/10 times I get them when I am happy as a lark, or just doing every day ordinary things-not thinking baout any stress. With panic attacks its usually repressed emotions that you concientiously aren't usually aware of.

Is it that? Maybe-talk to a counselor/stress therapist?

That sounds exactly like an allergic reaction. You should have an EpiPen on hand (ask your doc for an Rx) in case it happens again... cuz it can get more severe than what happened this past time.

Also, go get allergy tested - for food and environmental allergens.

Thank you for your responses. I think I will ask my doctor for his opinion & also see what he says about allergy testing. If it turns out that I don't have allergies to something I had just eaten, then I will assume it's anxiety causing this.
What's bad is....I'm sure these things can start out as allergy related & then turn into a panic attack just from not being able to breathe

Lynda, it has happened to me for a very long time, I call it "choking" but it seems to come from something in the air. I have this whooping kind of inhaling when it happens. I absolutely have to stop talking, eating, etc. and drink water. The CF doctor called it vocal cord dysfunction but the speech therapist says the correct name is now discordant vocal fold motion and gave me exercises to reduce it from happening and to get through it when it does.

Ok... I have a combination for you..... my daughter will have a panic attack if she eats wheat/gluten ~ took us over a year to figure out why she was having panic attacks all the time !! We are so thankful now that we know ~ we had reason to believe that she might also have celiac disease so she was tested and came back negative, but because of the panic & emotional stress that wheat seems to cause her she chooses to follow a celiac diet.
