I never heard anyhting about the advile before, but drinking alcohol can affect a person with CF. Alcohol dehydrates the body and when a CF person drinks alcohol and loses some fluids the mucus in the lungs starts to thicken up, depending on how much you drink this could affect you the next day as well. I know that before I found this out I would get drunk and wonder why would I have such a hard time breathing the next day. When the mucus thickens up it traps air in your lungs, air that is supposed to come out, this can cause further damage to your lungs. If you are going to drink make sure that the next day you drink a lot of water.Dave 29 w/cf

Hi,alcohol is poisonous for cells like nicotin, it´s not good for the health of anyone, so why should we destroy our body even more?It will certainly not harm you to drink one glass of beer, wine or mixed drink from time to time, just don´t exaggerate...Uli,41,cf

Hello, Anonymous. =-) I did hear about ibprofin (advil) helping with the lungs. My doctors were going to put me onto it. I remember they took a bunch of blood tests to determine what dosage I should take, but in the end they decided not to. Jarod22 with cf

Hi, The hospital where our daughter (child) is treated did some studies as well. If I remember correctly there were some positive results on the patients that took Ibuprofen as well but I do not know all the details. I believe it was respiratory function that improved.

My center puts patients on an Ibuprofen regimen - there is special dosing to take to make sure you get the most benefit. I was on it for about a year - the problem is I ended up getting ulcer like symptoms because it's hard on the tummy.Ask your center - they should know the amounts. If not - let me know and I'll find out for you. You do have to be careful with long term use of pain killers like Tylenol, Advil, etc. - they can cause other problems.Piperpmcp@comcast.netP.S. YES alcohol is extremely bad for you. Alcohol causes a person to get drunk because it is a poison and that is literally your body responding to getting poisoned. Anyway - it is VERY bad and harmful for CFers to drink alchol - read through my post about Get Your Fluids - we went over it in detail <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I would be very careful about drinking, allowing that the fact that I've done my fair share. Here are my reasons. 1) we all know alcohol, even a little can be dangerous when it mixes with other drugs. Most of us are on at least a few medications. 2) Using harmful substances, even in small doses rather infrequently can affect your chances of getting certain treatments, like transplants and some study drugs. If you just HAVE to drink, I'd try to make sure it was milder stuff and not much of it, not often. Sometimes, you just have to toast with champagne and I don't think you need to avoid ever coming in contact with the stuff. HollyCatheryn
