Rib Pain

I know that another post was similar to this but I didn't want to overtake that one.

On Thursday I have a horrible coughing attack and when it was finally done my side hurt a ton. It is kind of towards the back on the right side in the middle where the ribs would be I think. I thought I pulled a muscle so I took a muscle relaxer which did nothing.

Anyway, the pain got worse and worse and it hurts so much if I touch it I want to cry. If I lie on it I can feel the bone digging into me.

Is is a broken rib? I can breathe normally though so could it still be? Would you guys reccommend still doing the vest? I have an appt on Thursday and I want to be my best for it but it kills when I cough.

Thank you all and I hope you have a wonderful Father's day!

I'm not sure Sue. It concerns me that you say it's painful to the touch and you can feel the bone digging in. The pains I get after major coughing spells (or sometimes just out of nowhere) are due to Pleurisy (inflammation in the lining of the lungs, I'm told). In THAT case, I take motrin to control the inflammation. Maybe try that and see if it makes a difference??? As far as doing the vest, I'm inclined to say it might be better to hold off. Do you have any other airway clearance you can do? Acapella or someone to help you with CPT (which could be done so as to avoid the sensitive area)? If it's really, really bad I'd consider calling the doc or nurse and asking them for advice or even trying to get in before Thursday. I only say that because I've had things happen just a few days before an appointment and figured I'd just stick it out until the appointment, only to become super-sick. If you can't do your airway clearance because it's too painful, even skipping those few days can be really detrimental (at least in my experience). Keep us posted and I hope you feel better soon.
