Right Atrial "Mass"

Hello everyone - between the new house, the new job (long story, but had to transfer to a different location to keep a job and my insurance), and recent medical tests, things have been crazy and I still haven't been able to post regularly.

The latest on me (after tests nearly every day for the last two weeks):

About 4 weeks ago, my heart started to alternate between feeling like it was racing, shooting pains on the right side, and feeling normal. An EKG showed bradycardia (slow heartbeat) with arrhythmia (abnormal rhythms) and the docs could hear a "clicking" sound with their stethoscopes, so they ordered an echocardiogram.

That showed a "mass" in the right atrium of my heart. I don't know how to read ultrasounds, but I could see it. Their first suspicion varied between my CF doctor, the radiologist and the cardiologist. CF doc and radiologist both thought it was a clot on the end of my port, and the cardiologist thought it was some other mass. Had a CT chest scan to rule out any pulmonary clots, then a contrast study on my port, which revealed the catheter tip of my port was rubbing the right valve of my heart and suspected of causing my shooting pain, so they removed my port. It was noted at this time that the mass was not actually at the tip of catheter, but the radiologist who pulled the port said he still thought it was a blood clot. Still continuing to alternate between feeling the heart race, pain, and normally, but the pain has changed to feel more like my heart is being squeezed or compressed.

Follow up echocardiogram completed with contrast plus a bubble study revealed that the mass was still there and they identified a second one. Bubble study showed a positive for ASD (basically a hole in the heart), but only when I cough...LOL. Apparently, the cardiologist has indicated that at this point, the positive ASD isn't a concern.

So now, they are debating between whether these masses are IVC Clots or possibly tumors. In the meantime, today, just behind my knee cap started hurting so badly I can barely walk. If I hold completely still, it doesn't hurt, but any movement or weight bearing hurts quite badly and makes me feel like my leg is going to give out on me.

So now, tomorrow I am having a Doppler test done on my leg ( to check for a clot) and they are trying to schedule a cardiac MRI, which apparently will tell them for sure whether or not the masses in my heart are clots or not. If they are not clots, I am not sure what the next step is.

Had anyone else experienced anything similar to this? What was the outcome?

In the meantime, prior to all of this, I participated in a polyp study, and pseudomonas (which I have NEVER cultured), grew out of those. I guess I'm just feeling a little sucker punched right now, and I just want an answer - don't we all. ?

Amy,
Thats a lot to swallow at one time. I.... like the above poster.... hope you get some answers soon. Sometimes the "not knowing" is worse than the actual problem. I'll keep you in my prayers. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

The only time I ever heard of that was a friend of mine who is a nurse had a tumor there it was an atrial myxoma and his symptoms were that he was short of breath.. He actually presented to the emergency room and we put him in the "fast track" thinking he was having asthma symptoms and thankfully one of the doctors did a catscan of his chest and they found it.

He did have to have surgery, but he is fine now and long since back to work... I am not saying that is what you have but that is what he had.. It was not cancerous at all... just cumbersome.

Please let us know how things are going.... I can't imagine how stressful this is for you and I am really sorry I didn't respond eariler.. ( hate it when I get wrapped in myself)

Thinking of you,

Jennifer

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. And Jennifer, please don't apologize...I have read about your trials as of late and I think they're far worse than mine for the moment!

The latests tests revealed that there were two masses on the first echo - and the most recent one shows only one. So, they are presuming the first mass was an IVC clot, but the 2nd mass they have now said is definitely not a clot and most likely a myxoma. However, now I have to wait for a cardiac MRI, which they couldn't get scheduled until 9/19...they are trying to get me in sooner, but we will see.

My CT scan today also showed a partial collapse of my middle lung lobe, with some fluid, so they think that is what is causing my chest pain, as it is resting directly against my heart and they apparently can share the same nerve sensors???

The doppler on my leg showed no clots, so they think my knee is an ortho problem and not related to current issues....so, we will watch that for a few days and refer me out to another doctor if it doesn't get better.

It's the whole "hurry up and wait" scenario that I hate. You're right, Jennifer, it is the not knowing that is the pits!

Thanks again everyone for keeping me in your thoughts. As a side note, apparently myxomas can sometimes be genetic...got a little chuckle out of that one. I'll update when I know more.

I hope this finds everyone as well tonight!

Oh Gosh AMy.. Genes.. who needs them..... Who knows what I would be if my genes were normal... so we have to take the bad with the good.. but I know what you mean about laughing about genetic things.. I have three genetic diseases.. Sometimes I think my parents should have had watched a movie that night instead...

Amy, try not to google to much about the myxomas, if that is what you have it can be treated... It is just CF makes things so much more of a pain in the neck...

Gosh I am surprised that you are not in the hospital with a partial lung collapse...If you condition changes I would call your doctor...

Like I said my friend that had the myoxmas he had surgery, but he is doing great now.. and he feels so much better..

Waiting sucks.. I am waiting too. I have to wait till Sept 19 and even then I may not know anything.. We will wait together...My email is Jennifershope@yahoo.com

We can keep each other company..... SOmetimes that helps the most.. having ppl who understand... I know for me.. posting on here helps me to feel so understood.

Please keep posting,

Jennifer
