I was just reading about this bacteria that cfers can get. Does anyone have it here? Do they isolate you while in the hospital? How do they treat it (which antibioticcs)?

I sometimes culture S. Maltophilia, but I don't think I have cultured it in a while. No, I haven't been isolated. They treat it with whatever antibiotic it is susceptible to. I am usually on oral Bactrim and I go on differnt combinations of IVs every few months.

I was isolated for a while when I was diagnosed with a mycobacteria, but it ended up being Avium not TB, so they un-isolated me. I had to take 3 kinds of oral antibiotics for 2 years to get rid of it.

My 2 yr. old son has been culturing it since about last August. He hasn't been hospitalized with it, so I'm not sure about isolation. The doctors usually prescribe Bactrim when he gets a cough. Last time the cough came back a couple of weeks after we finished the Bactrim so they gave him Augmentin (and orapred too I believe). Fortunately, it hasn't caused him much trouble. As far as I know, Steno. Maltiphilia is pretty similar to Pseudomonas. I've read studies that it is less susceptible to the anti.'s used to treat PA, but that it also generally causes less trouble than PA.

My daughter cultured it last summer while she was in the hospital. They did not isolate her because they said that it was not passed between CFers. Her strain was resistant to most of the antibiotics used to treat it, but finally minocycline and Cipro got rid of it. She had not cultured it since.

Both my boys have had it too. They take oral Bactrim, but have been on IV bactrim at different times. We've never been isolated because of it.
