School problems continued...

This is a follow up for a post I did mid october regarding problems I am having w/my daughter's school. Last Friday we finally got our much awaited 504 meeting only to be shot down once again. This time the principal was there and she says there has to an academic need for a 504! This is so not what I know of a 504. Again, they just made a list of what accomodations they will do for her and insisted she does not need one b/c since she has cf any school would be crazy to hold her back. I told them I was told(by you guys) that without a 504 the school does not have to do anything. They looked at me like I was crazy just like they did when I said she should have a tutor come to our house after missing 3 days. They said that has never been done. I mean what is the big deal that I seem to have such a problem getting my daughter on it? Does it look bad for the school or something? Maybe it costs more money or what? When they said she has to have an academic need I was like then why do kids get on it sometimes before they even start school?? I thought the academic need is for the IDEA. The principal was really nice and made everything seem ok but like I said, even if they do everything right(which they just recently started getting better at following the accomodations after much fighting)she may not be here next year and a 504 is supposed to follow her anywhere for her whole life. So, my quetion is, what do I do now? If the principal says she doesn't need it, who do I go to? Thanks for your time!

OMFG I want to smack them for you.

I would contact Beth Sufian, Attorney who has CF & advocates for CFers. She might be able to "persuade" them a bit more or at least help YOU to do so.

I wouldnt trust them. I hate to say that because there are schools that will work with you, but with CF you never know what to expect & I would hate to see things all screwed up instantly.

Please contact Beth at:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.sufianpassamano.com/

</a>
Ms Sufian also operates the CF Legal Information Hotline (1-800-622-0385) funded by a grant from Chiron Corporation. Individuals with CF and their families members and healthcare providers can contact the Hotline for information on the laws that protect people with CF and their families.

ADDITIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION: Sufian & Passamano, L.L.P. 811 Rusk Avenue, Suite 712 Houston, Texas 77002 Telephone: 713-224-1166 Facsimile: 713-224-1161 E-mail: BethSufian@aol.com JamesPassamano@aol.com

I would go straight to the Super. The 504 is supposed to look at health as well. That's why my sons says other wise health indicated. Meaning that he has a health impairment that can pose a problem to his schooling. We just finally got the 504 done.

Do you go to a cf clinic? Our clinic has already agreed to go with us to our first 504 meeting. The cf social worker is going to go as well as the cf registered nurse. The cff.org website also has information you can print off to take to the school about common accomodations a cf child would need in a school setting.

It is your daughters right to have a 504. The only reason I know of that schools are not promoting them anymore is that a 504 plan allows a child to possibly get free schooling in college.

With that said I would definitely do what Jazzysmom said and contact Ms. Suffian.

I am a teacher and completely mortified that a principal would act that way!!! She must not be knowledgeable about the laws that protect special needs students.

Take care and let us know,
Lynsey
