Should bad genes mean no more kids?

So, should parents who know they are carriers or already have a CF child (or children) "roll the dice" and have more children?

If you'd like to read the post that got me thinking about this, please <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://tinyurl.com/yba7h4e

This is such a personal decision and I know there are millions of different oppinions on this subject. My husband and I have decided that we will not be having more children. We feel like we need to focus all of our time on Grants care.

We're still undecided. My husband is of the same frame of mind as the individual who wrote the article you noted. The question being "isn't it better to be born than not born at all?" We still have a few years to decide before the other risks (e.g., Down's) go up due to my age....though there are always genetic risks for ANY child...we just happen to know about CF. It's a tough call. Our daughter's doctor looked at her and stated that the median life expectancy is the upper 30s - she then followed her statement with: "but I see your daughter's life expectancy being more into the mid-50s". A child born today will receive many more treatments specific to CF than today's individuals who are in their 30s...just another thing for us to consider....

I also worry about our daughter's future hospital stays and how they may affect her brother...time lost with him...difficulties being away from each other...how that might play into things as well...

And please, let's not get into a discussion on "median" vs "average"...I get it....but, perhaps others don't...
