Silly Question of the Day...

We are currently giving Ellie three CPT sessions x 20 mins each daily. Given that she doesn't cough during treatments, are the CPT sessions somewhat ineffective? There is a lot of talk about proper coughing techniques for optimum mucus clearance - given that you can't teach an infant how to cough to expel mucus, what are your thoughts regarding how effective CPT is at this age? We're not about to stop doing CPT, but I wanted to know what others' thoughts are....

Just think of it as keeping the mucous from settling and building up in one place causing mucous plugs. I didn't get anything up when I was a baby/young child either, but I think CPT kept me clear.

The creator of the Vest hypothesizes (or there may actually be published research...I'll check for you) that the device hydrates airways.

aside from that, loosening mucus can be helpful for coughing throughout the day.

CPT and/or the vest is essential, from day one, twice a day, ever day.

Ah yes, go here <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.respirtech.com/patients/research/mechanisms.php">http://www.respirtech.com/pati...esearch/mechanisms.php</a> and click on Tomkiewicz [1994]

Great study for those who live in countries where your physicians swear up one side and down the other that the Vest isn't in any way superior to manual CPT

I'm not sure that it does a ton -- but the way I've always seen it is that even if it isn't doing much right now, its setting a good habit that will make it less difficult to get into once it is needed.
