Sluggish Bowel

One of my guys is home from school today (again ) with another stomache ache, he cant seem to get a whole week of school in. Anyway, this time he is vomitting and sleeping the rest of the time, there is no fever and the stomach aches come and go. This has been going on for some time now (without the vomiting). I just got off the phone from the hospital, and they are thinking about changinf some of his meds. They say it sounds like a sluggish bowel. Is that the same thing as a partial obstruction?? Im waiting to hear back from them to see wether they want him to go in or not.

Mel,

I may be way off here, but just a question for you. Does your little guy eat all solids for every meal and every snack? I ask because mark went through this for years when he was younger. He told me that as he got older and more self sufficient (which was about 10-11 for him as his mom worked Full time, went to school part time, was dating and he had an out of control sometimes in rehab older brother) he started mixing his meals up.

One meal he'd have someting liquid (protein shake from his dads store-althoug I'd recommend something more along the lines of carnation instant breakfast, ensure, boost, homemade milkshake with 1/2 scoop of pure protein, pediasure if he's that young) and then the next meal he'd have a "regular" solid meal. Then for the next meal/snack he'd have something liquid again. He kind of "self medicated" (as I call it) to find what worked for him. And when he was eating all solid meals, he was having the same problems you mentioned of your little one. Since he started this type of eating habbit years ago, he's stuck with it and still does it. It seems to combat this blocked bowel problem.

Like I said, I may be way off here... but maybe an idea to try when you get this sluggish bowel all cleared up?

Hope your little one feels better soon!

My son is 11, and yes he has been eating solids for every meal. Hes been having problems for well over a month now. To begin with everyone just thought it was a gasto bug, but the stomach aches have become more frequent and more severe over the last week. We tried adjusting his creons and it hasnt helped. Also his bowel movements havent changes at all, and he has them 2 to 3 times a day.
Thanks for the advice, once he gets sorted Ill definately give it a try, anything to try and prevent him being in pain again!

Has the clinic suggested trying milk of mag or prescribed miralax? A friend of mines' granddaughter gets miralax every day. We've just used milk of mag -- as per our doctor's instructions a couple times a day just to get things moving again. Liza

I will no more after Thursday as they have booked him in at the hospital for an appointment and also, finally, an ultrasound. Not sure what they will try him on yet, but they did mention a med that you dissolve in water and drink, never herad the name before though, lol. For now they have just told me to give him plenty of liquids.

I think my friend's daughter mixes miralax in with juice every morning. Good luck! Hope things start moving along <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Well, they want to see him at the hospital on Thursday morning. Also he will be getting a ultrasound. Hopefully it will show something, its better than not knowing whats causing him to be in pain.

He may need a new enzyme. I was on Creons for years. Then I started getting blocked up all the time. The docs threw all kinds of laxatives at me, and that was not helping the problem for me. Finally, I was changed to Ultrase. I take a low dose of it and it seems to help as long as I drink plenty of water and keep active. I also find limiting the portions of red meat to help me tons. If I have too much red meat it majorly slows the system down...no matter how many Ultrase I take. Fruits, Vegis, and Fiber with lots of water and not taking the Creons helped me out. If I would take one Creon I would get backed up. That is just what works for my system, but maybe worth some thought.

Best of luck with your young one.
