Ok, so here we go:

About a week and 1/2 - 2 weeks ago I was at our local big time watering hole/meat market, where I know a ton of people. But that night, no one I knew was there. So I walked around drinking pints of smithwicks (this was on a sat night btw) looking for atleast SOMEONE I knew. Sure enough, I spotted a female I knew from my past (long time ago) sitting at a table, with some other chick and some other dude.

Walked up, said hi, we hugged, she introduced me to the other two people. I of course started talking to the dude, trying to get to know him. He seemed very angry in general, and very quick to snap if someone got near his girlfriend. He was fairly muscley, and me being into weights also, asked him about working out and such. He said he was into MMA (mixed martial arts/UFC). I thought that was cool, because although i'm physical, I don't want to sacrifice myself in an octagon with possible death for little money. I asked him if he does matches, and if so when he planned on doing one so I could attend. He leaned forward and grinned (in a very evil way - and I thought I was evil) "I can't, I'm wanted". I chalked it up to someone talking crap due to alcohol etc.

I talked to him for maybe 2 and 1/2 hours. I ended up coming away with "Man, that guy just isn't right". The girlfriend seemed very uncomfortable around him, and I basically told myself "Man, put distance between you and him, he's bad news". So I did. Said goodbye to the girl I knew, and his girlfriend, and went home, crashed, and generally forgot about that evening (atleast in the "this is important" system folder in my brain). I meet a ton of people because i'm very social, and basically can and do talk to anyone in a social setting. I just thought he was another angry young guy, nothing of any significance.

Boy was I mistaken, and I generally feel bad. Let me supply the links:

Anyways. I remember coming into work the next day and hearing the other officers tell me about the crazy choppers and everything else. Apparently this is what happened:

The crazy dude and his girlfriend had a falling out, and they split up (Well I guess SHE split up with him, and he REALLY didn't like it). He called her and told her he was going to kill her, and her parents. I guess he went by where he thought he could find her (residence), and she wasn't there (thankfully no one was there). Then, he went by her parents house (both times he had a way loaded .45 handgun). The girlfriends mom saw the security lite go on outside at around 12:56 am, looked outside, and saw the crazy dude sitting in his car in the driveway. Crazy dude saw mom see him, and then he spun his wheels and left. In the past the girlfriends dad had held him at gunpoint after kicking in the families front door while looking for his girlfriend. The dad went on record to say he was a trained soldier, who had seen active combat, and this crazy guy just didn't care about anything, including him pointing a gun at him, and was a giant bane in his side over sveral years of his daughter being involved with crazy guy.

Anyways, the crazy guy left the parents house (he fully intended on killing them), and ended up at an intersection of my small suburb town that I constantly travel through, at around 12:47am, at a red light. The LEO who was killed rolled up to the same red light, and the investigators think for some reason, the LEO rolled down his passenger window, signaled to crazy guy to talk to him, and then crazy guy rolled down his window and started to shoot the crap out of the LEO. LEO put on his lights, sped away, went through an intersection, and then into a tree. They think he was trying to get to the close neighborhood hospital. Supposedly the guy was a hardcore aryan nation racist, but during our conversation I was never led to believe he was that way, but that doesn't mean crap.

Anyways crazy dude sped away to his mom's 2 story house. Cops received an anon tip from current girlfriend telling them that he told her he was going to kill her, her parents, and had just killed a cop. They traced the call, she gave them directions to his house, and as soon as the cops showed up he immediately started spraying bullets at them from the second story bedroom window. The cops tried to negotiate, but were met with bullets. Two SWAT snipers each shot him in the chest, and killed him.

That's the story in a whole, and it is extremely sad. To be honest, while he did seem somewhat unstable in the angry zone, I did occasionally see a human side in him, when I would say something silly and see him laugh...I saw a soul/person in his eyes. I know Jeffrey Dahmer was way nutty, and what he did was way crazy. But i'm sure a good friend of his said the same thing i'm kind of saying now: Even though I didn't want to become good friends, the person near me wasn't some evil vile beast monster...

I had no idea this was the same dude (even after I heard all about the news), till I woke up the following morning and saw the front page of the local paper with his face on it as the killer. It was quite trippy. On the way to the gym, I called our local talk show guy, was informed he was way deep in talking about the recently convicted Al Qaeda guy, and wasn't gonna talk about this dude, but the producer gave me the # for the news stations producer, and told me to call him by name. I did, informed him of my encounter with the guy, and he recorded my interview over the phone, and later called me back telling me it was going to be used on the local air news starting at 5am, and wanted the contact info for the more direct friend, which I contacted but havent heard anything back from.

It's all just so weird. Two people are dead, one person beyond troubled since the age of 12, the other a huge positive force to countless other people. They couldn't be more different in every way, and they collided in a giant spark of hate, violence, and death...And I had beers with the turd...

(next link has a good pic of him and the poor LEO that was killed)

What makes me uncomfortable (like there aren't tons of things in that story that makes me uncomfortable): When he told me he was wanted, I of course felt it was just some drinking angry guy talking meaningless macho crap. Well I guess he was being serious. If I would have seriously thought he was being honest, and was this violent and unstable, I would have went out of my way to find a LEO to turn him in. There were no LEO's around, I didn't, and now I question my inactions. I know "what if's" can drive you insane and are pointless, but maybe if I would have taken him serious, and turned him in, there wouldn't be a dead officer now with a giant family/extended family without their patriarch...I think deep down inside I reacted like most everyone else would have, but that doesn't make me feel better.
