Sodium Chrolide

I usually do Hypertonic Saline nebs, the name brand. But this time the CF pharmacy sent me sodium chloride. So I figured, what the hell. I have been doing it for a few days. As I am writing this, I had to leave work after only a few hours, because every few feet I walked, I was short of breath. My chest feels like a python is squeezing it. On top of all that, I didn't have my meter with me, but I'm pretty sure my blood sugars were running high. I took 1 unit of insulin. I had a similar problem with sodium chloride before, but since they changed the look of it, you no longer are required to measure it out, I thought it would be fine. I have been relatively free of lung problems most of my life, but this has hit me like a ton of bricks. I just hope I can recover from this and get into my usual routine of 70% PFTS.

Does anyone know the reason why the generic form of hypersal would effect me like this? I'm thinking it's mixed together a different way and I'm allergic to it. Do you think the CF pharmacy would send me the name brand version?

Hello Shane,

Not sure about your countries generic/brand differences. I see you are on line so thought I would quickly write to make sure you were diluting the Sodium chloride. I use 7% H/S, I mix 10mls of Sod. chloride with 22mls of sterile water.

Do hope you are feeling a little brighter soon.

Cheers

I would expect that it's not an allergy, however if you have an asthma component of CF, HTS can cause some bronchospasm. You might try doing a bronchodilator before your HTS, or think about doing a lower concentration.

It was because of the bronchospasm that I stopped doing HTS. That and I didn't see any benefit.

The CF services pharmacy now has generic sodium chloride for $19.45 instead of $35! I just got it in today...I think the label says 7% Sodium Chloride....

Here's a link to the stuff I got from them:

Thanks. The *new* Sodium Chloride comes as a single ampule, much like Hypersal. Actually, I think I got the flu. It kinda makes sense as some guy I work with was deadly sick the other week. I probably just caught it. But the generic form is causing pressure in my lungs though.

I absolutely love Hyper Sal. It is my weapon of choice. But it has to be brand name. I still don't know why the generic irritates me so much.
