Sputum Culture question

I asked the lab at the hospital, they said "don't refrigerate it but it can be overnight" Do you all agree with this or do you know differently? She was kind of aloof, so I don't completely trust her answer.
I don't always have a productive cough, so I want to be prepared for my clinic appt tomorrow, with my b/t tonight - they haven't received a culture from me in a long time.
Thanks,

I have done both. Growing up my local ped doc always told me to put it in the fridge overnight if I done it the night before and couldnt get it into the lab until the next morning. I have also left it out in room temp. It doesnt really matter. I believe that they put it unto a fridge in the lab. If you did put it into the fridge, I would take it out thirty mins or so before going to clinic to make sure it wasnt too cold. I was also told that it is better to get a culture the first thing in the morning if you can because the stuff has been sitting there overnight and ready to come out. But you should do it whenever you are most productive, for me that is in the evening. Good luck.

I was told to collect the sputum on the morning of my appointment and not to refrigerate.

I was told refridgerate, because it keeps the bacteria count to close its original when hacked up. they dont want to have false high readings and the cold slows down the bacterial growth. Ialways refidgerate, and they've said to every time.

Ditto to what Fruity said... but then that's because she is my daughter ! They said it won't change the type of bacteria that are there growing, (what you cough up is what you cough up) but it very likely will show a larger "count" of the bacteria, making them think you have a higher count in your lungs than you do.

I was told evening before and keep out at room temp. I wouldnt understand why they'd want the bacteria count down. As a Micro major I know they let samples sit in a overheated oven like thing for 3 days to make the bacteria grow faster and more so they can read it better. Who knows, it's a good question next time ya go in.
