I had my surgery on monday. I am still in pain -mostly when I cough, move, take a deep breath, but there is a dull ache when just laying still. I am still walking hunched over and all. Mind you that I am trying to get better so I can go home since I came in for a sick hospital visit.

Well this freaking new doctor on the CF team is a PITA. She is giving me a hard time about needing pain meds still. (I can have demerol or loratab). I've been alternating and I've been trying to use it as little as possible but unless I just lay here and not move I am in pain.

I have a HIGH pain tolerence too. I didn't need meds when I gave birth -but this is really suckin! If you look at my stomach you can see that its still really swollen and its bruised...UGH she just makes me so mad and it doesn't help that I don't like her anyways...she jsut doesnt listen.

So now here I sit IN PAIN....trying not to be a big baby all b/c if I dont "wean" off the meds I can't go home...now Im just afriad that no coughing is going to land me right back here.

Hey Jessica!
I'm in a similar boat. I had a bowel resection/appendectomy 2 1/2 weeks (done open, they tried laperoscopy first) ago and everyone is expecting me to suck it up and endure the pain. Don't feel guilty about asking for pain meds, since you clearly are hurting. You won't heal properly if your body can't relax. It's also important to take those pain meds to make breathing treatments easier (you don't want to end up with pneumonia, not fun).

Can you ask for another doctor? Does the hospital have pain management specialists? Whatever you do, don't back down. Demand those pain meds!

I agree with Haley. If you don't manage the pain, you are not going to 1) heal from the procedure and 2) keep your CF under control.

If you are resisting coughing due to pain, something needs to change.

If the CF doc specifically is causing trouble, wait till you see some resident on rounds and talk them into it. Most are dumb enough that if you sound convincing they will give you want you ask for.

Don't worry about feeling like a wimp, take the meds, you will heal and then you can wean off.

Oh dang, that must suck, so sorry. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

The pain was pretty awful, now trying to remember it. For the next week I didn't do my vest and barely got out of bed. I never really took pain meds(stronger than tylenol)..just pain meds the day OF the surgery, but never anymore, mostly because I have this weird fear of pain meds.
I bet they would have made recovery much better.

Like others said, you need those meds, and you need to get them. Don't feel bad about taking them, you need to heal first.
