Swimming in rivers, lakes and oceans?

Just curious if anyone stays away from swimming in rivers, lakes or oceans? I let my kids go to the beach and play in the water, but sometimes they close them down b/c of stuff in the water. Any thoughts on this? We're going to a place this weekend that has a place to swim in the lake. Personally, I'm not a big fan of swimming in it, but I know the kids would love it. My plan is to try and avoid it, and maybe go fishing instead. Am I being too paranoid?

We have a summer membership to a local private lake. I asked our CF doc about going and he said "absolutely" -- its great exercise for them and unless there is a high bacteria count, there should be no concerns. The lake we go to routinely tests at less than 1 part per million of bateria. Most lakes don't close unless it hits about 300 parts per million, so I feel good about this.

I think Ocean water is probably better for CF kids, and I would be at the ocean if I weren't in a land locked state. I love the ocean.

But our Pulm said that the only restriction he would place is that she couldn't scuba dive. I'm okay with that.

the only time i was told to stay away from lakes/rivers/oceans etc. was right after having a picc line out or now, deaccessing my port. the docs always told me to wait about 3 days before i went in water that wasn't a shower just to make sure the hole had plenty of time to close completely

My kids swim in river, lakes and the ocean They love it! The doctor has no problems with it and as already said above, it's great exercise!
The only pools I do not want them in are indoor pools (like at a hotel...I'm ok with the YMCA or something like that). I just get a little worried with the way things are so damp inside those little rooms...but that is just my opinion, not our doctors
