Terrified of teeth impressions today!

Hi!

OK, so in a few hours I have to get some cavities filled AND am going to have impressions taken of my teeth for a nighttime whitening kit from my dentist and also for a night guard for my teeth. I'm terrified! I have a pretty touchy gag reflex, and all I remember about doing this when I was like 12 is that I gagged and it hurt and it was horrid.

Can anyone put my mind at ease? Have you had this done? Was it so bad? How long is the "gunk" in your mouth? Are there any tricks to not gag?

Sonia, i can really relate. I can't even have x-rays taken without gagging. I had molds taken last year and it only took a few minutes (I think 2). I closed my eyes and breathed really slow through my nose. That really helped. I told the woman beofre hand just in case she had to bring a bucket- But I was ok.

Mark hates this too, he says it tickles his gag reflex and then he has a couging attack and then it's just a big disaster.

Last time he had bleach trays made, he asked if they could kind of squat to put the trays in, while he was in the chair. That way he could sit upright/almost lean forward a bit instead of having his head back so far. It was a little bit uncomfortable for the tech, but it was successful. Maybe ask about that.....

I had molds taken of my teeth for caps, and it only took a couple of mins. It really wasn't a problem at all.

Thanks, everyone for all the kind words. I just got back and it was really NOTHING at all! I even sat back in the chair for the lower teeth mold. I was afraid the stuff would run back down my throat, but its way too putty-like to do that. Just really really easy. I wish I hadn't been so afraid.
