Our nephew, who is 3 , has been dx with asthma and has been given ventalin to use 4 times a day. He is refusing to take it , is scared of the mask,( maybe an adult mask, as it covers his eyes), any ideas, will a spacer work as he dosent like the taste.

Pari makes a bubbles the fish mask. It's a soft plastic/rubber mask with eyes and fins painted on it like a fish. I've gotten a couple of those from the RT department at the hospital and have ordered them online. The RTs also gave me a dinosaur one. They also make smaller children's masks.

Does he have to use a mask or can it be blown into his face? Liza

One time when Reece fought the mask terrible in the hospital ( when we first introduced it) the RTs put some liquid smelling stuff on the rim of the mask....bubble gum, watermelon, strawberry...etc... worked but I was leary about him inhaling that stuff. It worked though.

Hiya Craig,

How's it going? Our daughter uses a ventolin inhaler before she does her nebuliser, purely just to open her airways. She uses the inhaler via a spacer, no probs at all. she's even got a kiddies one with teddy bears on which helps, lol. As for your nephew not liking the taste, I've no idea what to suggest. I definitely would stay clear of the mask. What about just giving him a treat after he's used the inhaler? I dunno? Can I get back to you?!!

thanks guys, I thought there may be kiddies masks out there, the dinosaur one would be ideal as he is dino mad, its just a matter of sourcing them now. I'll ask the boys nurse as she deals with asthma as well as the Cf, didn't want to bother her just now as I think there are a couple of more babies locally with Cf just dx, and I'm thinking back to the amount of time she took with us at first.
but thanks again
