TOBI and/or Zyvox, not TOBRA causing ringing

I know that TOBRA (IV form) causes hearing loss but I was wondering what the chances were that TOBI (neb form) does the same thing. I have been on Tobi and Zyvox (orally) probably about 4 or 5 times since December (2006) of last year, but have not been on Tobra since last December (2006).

I am currently on Tobi and just finished the two weeks of Zyvox (orally) and have noticed some ringing in my ears. Not every day, but a few times a week, just some dull ringing that lasts up to a minute or more. I dont think the hearing is necessarily affected unless my ears are ringing, but its kinda of annoying...lol.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This is the FDA approved prescribing information for TOBI.

Since TOBI is breathed into your lungs, systemic exposure (and therefore the ability to damage hearing) is incredibly small.

However, as you will see on the TOBI PI, ringing in the ears is listed. It's important to understand how the "side effects" of a drug are compiled for a PI.

The patient on the medication in question is brought in and is asked by the study designer if they're having any discomfort/adverse events at all. Since nothing can be ruled out, anything the patient says is included.

So ringing in the ears is listed. But guess what? The patients in the TOBI clinical trials most likely were exposed to IV Tobra at some point and therefore the ringing in their ears could have been from that. Maybe not.

Or you could be like me - the ringing in my ears was from Zithro. But if those patients were on zithro but had ringing in their ears while on the TOBI clinical trial, ringing in the ears would be listed under adverse events.

So all I'm trying to say is that TOBI could be the cause. But more than likely, it's not. Ringing in the ears doesn't necessarily occur right after IV exposure. Maybe u just never noticed it before.

Anyway, ear ringing really stinks. I'm right there with you. I can't stand it. Make sure to get your hearing tested (all CFers should be getting this one once a year anyway). As loud as my ringing is, I never showed hearing loss. Go figure.

Take care

However I believe there have been reports of hearing loss with Tobi since this was published. Tobi inhaled is still an aminoglycoside so there is always the risk. The website itself does warn that Tobi can cause hearing loss http://www.tobitime.com/
