Toddlers and Enzymes

My two year old is currently on Creon 5 enzymes. He takes 2 at meals and 1 at snack. I am wondering if he needs more though....seems like his poop looks more oily but he really isn't pooping any more than normal. How many enzymes does everyone else's toddlers take? Thanks

You might want dosage information in terms of food and enzyme units. My son is 3 and we use creon 10, which contain 10,000 units of the enzymes per capsule.

His typical drink is 8 ounces and consists of 3 ounces of YoBaby whole-milk smoothie mixed with 5 ounces of organic whole milk. This puts it at about 240 calories total. He takes 2 of the creon-10s (20,000 units) for this and all's well.

If he drinks straight yogurt smoothie, it takes a bit less enzymes and if he's been a picky eater and we boost his milk with some half/half it takes maybe an extra 1/2 capsule.

When he eats a McDonald's chicken nugget happy meal with fries (his current favorite meal) he typically eats about half of it and needs 3 of the creon-10 capsules.

We gauge enzyme dosage off of the milk by looking at how many calories in whatever he's eating come from fat: a chunk of bacon means more enzymes than a similar sized chunk of chicken; a jar of applesauce or a slice of bread generally does not call for any enzymes or at most a 1/2 capsule.

My son will be turning three in August. He takes 3 Creon 10's (or 6 Creon 5's) with meals. So that it 30,000 lipase. Your son does seem to be on the low end. They actually told me that Jack was low-medium range recently. My kid were on Creon 5 (1-2 per meal) when they were infants. They would go up every 6 months or so.

Our son started off on pancreacarb and then was switched to Pancrease MT-4s. Think he was on 2-3 when he was a baby and on formula. Now he takes about 4 with meals and 1-2 with snacks. Depends upon what he eats.

When he was a baby a lot of times if he was a really good eater, his stools would be a lot looser and would smell like feta cheese. TMI <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> L

I definately agree with everyone else, seems a bit low. My daughter 2 years old, takes 4 Creon5 with meals, 1-2 with snacks depending on what I am giving her.
Higher fat, more Creon.

Ben was on Creon 5 (1 with breastfeeding) 2 at every meal until he weaned fully at 19 months. He then needed 4 Creon 5 at every meal. We are now taking 2 Creon 10 (same as 4 Creon 5) and sometimes 3 if he has red meat. Our increase definately happened as his appetite increased when he hit the toddler year. Try adding one more capsule at meals and see if it helps with stools. With a lite snack we only give 1cap sometimes.

Hope this helps. Jody

My child, Hannah was on Creon 5 from the age of 1 year old, up until one month before her 4th birthday. When we ended Creon 5, she was up to 2-3 Creon 5 for meals, and 1-2 for snacks.

She now takes Creon 10, and was taking 2-3 for meals, and 1-2 for snacks, until a little over a week ago. I asked that same exact question to the doctor while she was in the hospital for her first-ever "tune up"...(he couldn't believe she was 5 years, and almost 2 months, and had never had a tune up until then)...we didn't actually bring her in for a tune-up...we brought her in, because of a fever, and lots of coughing...we found out she had pneumonia in her right lung, so she stayed 8 days for a tune up. He upped her Creon 10 to 4-5 for meals, and 3-4 for snacks...I expressed to him that I had been concerned for a while because of oily looking stools, and she didn't really seem that she was gaining weight. She's gained 3 pounds 2 ounces since she was released from the hospital 8 days ago.

So, you may want to ask her CF doctor about it, to be safe.

My daughter is 18months ans is on 2 Creon 5's, with every meal and 1 with snacks.
Every child is different and will take different doses. It depends on how pancriatic insufficiant they are. If i was to give her any more, which i have tried due to the fact that our dietician said she should be on more. She got constipated and red rash on her bottom, because it was too much for her.
If you feel its not enough, try giving him a half or 1 extra and see how he goes.
I figure, if there poos are fine, no tummy aches, good weight gain, then leave as they are and/or speak to the dietician.

Hope this helps.

My son is 10mo, 8.8 kilos and he takes 4 Lipase (4,500 units = 18,000 units total) with each meal. He usually eats about 4oz of 31Kcal formula and about 75 Kcals of solids. This seems higher than you all. Does anyone know the max amount per weight?

I wouldn't go so much on the amount of poos he does, more on how much fat is in it if you know what I mean?! My daughter is on Creon 10,000. When she was drinking 8oz bottles of formula she was taking 4 enzymes for this.

Good luck.
