I just coughed up some blood. It has happened it the past, but the last two times have been very scary. I'm on Blood Thinners and it's very frightening. Has anyone been on blood thinners and had a hemoptasis? Last time it happened it lasted about six days.......Joni 54 y/o w c/f

Hi Joni,
I' sorry you are experiencing this, I know how frightening hemoptysis can be. I just had my third embolization because of it 2 weeks ago. I have never been on blood thinners and considering my hemoptysis history i hope i never need to be. You may want to call your doctor if you havent already, because blood thinners and hemoptysis isnt a great combo. Maybe your doctor can cut down on the dosage of the blood thinners temporarily till you're past this bout with hemoptysis. I hope it stops soon for you. I willl be praying for you.... it is scarey.

Why are you on blood thinners?
I know when I would get IV's a long, long time ago, they used Heparin to keep the lines running. I had several bad cases of hemoptysis when I was on this, but that is what they did. I also was overdosed twice with heparin, one a student nurse gave me 10cc's the other the home nurse put my IV's and heparin incorrectly in the IV delivery system and I got heparin in the whole bag and very little IV antiobiotic, until I discovered it. Both times I was coughing up blood.

I am not sure what year they changed it to keep to lines open they just used Saline... what a great day that was.

I also, years ago when I was 12 took aspirin, I think for some pain I had in my leg. I was taken off that in a couple years when they realized having me thinned out in blood was not a good thing to do.

Just some of my stories, hope you can get a good solution.

I went into kidney failure after the antibiotics became toxic ( i had diareaha and was throwing up, also wasn't on iv fluids, so the combibation caused renal failure. I had a temp. port for dialisis. When the removed the port I ended up with a dvt , was on blood thinners for six months at that time also. I am scared and would like to know how others take care of themselves when they have a bleed. I'm always blaming myself for "doing to much" and then get mad at myself, but when i feel good i can't help it. Please let me know if there are any special things i should or shouldn't be doing. i would call your doc IMMEDIATELY.

blood thinners can make it extremely difficult for your blood to clot.... and your lungs may fill up with blood.

you want to know if there are any special things you should or shouldn't be doing? CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

Thanks Amy, I did call my doctor, held last nights blood thinner pill. i will be seeing the c/f team today(had appt. for today) Hopefully everything will be o.k. I'm praying.........Joni 54 y/o w c/f
