Understanding Sputum Test Results

I was wondering if anyone understands the numbers on the sputum test results when they test for susceptibility?

From mine: Levofloxain 0.25 susceptible, Cefazolin <=4 Susceptible, Gentamicin 16 resistant, Cefepime 64 resistant.

I am wondering on the susceptible ones it the higher the number the more susceptible it is or the opposite. Also, on the resistant, is it the higher the number the more resistant it is?

I asked my nurse and she wasn't quite sure.

Thanks.

The higher the number on susceptibility the better it "kills" or controls the bacteria. The higher the resistance the more it doesn't.

There are "breakpoints" for each bacteria in relation to each drug.

So you cannot, in any way, compare the breakpoints (the numbers that you listed) from drug to drug.

What matters is Resistant, Suspetible, or Intermediate. This is ALL that matters.

And I have a feeling you know what those words mean. If not, reply and I'll explain.
